Page 4 LETTERS 1 Continued from page 2 \ 4) those with extreme notions and closed minds do not property represent a varied group. A good example of a violation of this principle was the ASI [Associated Students Inc. Finance and Budget committee's] decision to allocate over $1,000 to the GLBSA for films dealing with homosexuality, while the much broader group of business majors was denied anything from the ASI. In the way of monies needed for laser printers and furniture for studying purposes in the [Leon S.| Peters Building. You said you wanted to "understand Mr. Bums." Brad. I hope you do now. I despise true racism and find sexism unacceptable. This so-called "heterosexism" that you invented in your letter does not exist, unless you mean by it a man's natural Inclination toward a woman, or a woman's innate choice of a man. as a sexual, intimate partner. And I. sir, make no apology for following natural instincts when it comes to choosing a soul mate. Let's face It. Women and men complement each • other too perfectly for coincidence. Steve J. Bums Offended by Sanchez ISdttor. I am writing in response to the column written by Ignaclo Sanchez. "Jose's Idea about the new professor" printed in the Nov. 29 issue of The Collegian. • As I read through the column. I found myself becoming more and more upset about what was being said by Mr. Sanchez and his colleague. To begin with. 1 myself am not a frequenter of the Pit however. I pass there daily on my way to class and several times I have seen music groups performing that have been part of ethnic backgrounds other than "Just White. " For instance. I have seen performances by reggae and rap groups, which I have noticed attract The Dally Collegian Monday, Dec. 3, 1990 Just as much, if not more, attention than the group that was described by Mr. Sanchez. -I -am not familiar with the programming committee and it seems Mr. Sanchez is not either. However. I believe that they choose groups to perform based on their musical capabilities, which is how it should be. Furthermore, how do we know tf any Chicano groups even audition to perform? Reading this column. -1 got the impression that Only Whites are allowed to hang out In the Pit. and that possibly African Americans and Chlcanos are segregated into certain areas where they must meet I have yet to see the ropes segregating each area of the school into sections where ethnic groups must go. People hang out where they do by their own choices. Mr. Sanchez, as far as I know, nobody tells you where to go to socialize. What realty upset me the most was Mr. Sanchez's Idea that another "Chicano or other person of color" should fill the space in the English department. Mr. Sanchez also states that "we want someone we can work with." Well, isn't that prejudice. Mr. Sanchez? In my past 15 years of schooling. I've had teachers from all ethnic backgrounds, and have found that those I could most relate to have been those with the beit teaching capabilities. 1 did not base my Judgments on the ; race of the instructor. I am not that I am a better person. I'm Just saying that I believe a person should be hired based on their merits and admired based on their qualities as a human, being. I certainty hope that when I graduate from college and begin searching for Jobs.' that I am hired based on my qualifications and not because I am a woman and quotas need to be filled. If you feel that you cannot work or relate to the talented individuals of the English department that's your loss. In my past experiences with the English department as well as the various other departments on campus. I have felt that I could work well with them regardless of the person's race, gender, size, shape, etc. If you sincerely want to put a stop to racism. Mr. Sanchez, as you so claim in most of your editorials, you should definitely be looking to yourself first Instead of looking at a band made up of "five White guys" start seeing them as a group of human beings. Until you can shake your own prejudices, Mr. Sanchez. I don't believe you have the right to question other peoples' prejudgments. KassandraR ciark- lndifferent to plight Editor. This letter is written in response to Anna Daza's Nov. 30 column. I am not, here to defend Frank Aviles. even though there is much truth to what he is saying. My impression of Ms. Daza's column leads me to believe Uiat America has achieved eternal harmony and racism has been purified. I do hope Ms. Daza is not blind and cannot see how racism has been a serious matter In the history of Mexican Americans: If Ms. Daza has not done so. I suggest she take a course in Mexican history and discover for herself the presence of racism in American history. I was a little disturbed with her comment "Which is exactly what you and your 'people' axe turning out to be." What was her intention behind such words? If Mexicans do not Speak out when their dignity is violated, who will do so? Ms. Daza? I doubt it. And I am Indeed one of those people she mentioned. Mexicans if that is what she meant Let's be real. Laws can change the visible signs of racism, but they cannot change hearts. I even admit that racism is also present within the Hispanic community and I hope I can say the same for the Asian people. When I first came from Mexico, the first English speaking person I encountered was Asian. The only words I recall coming from his lips are "You stupid Mexican." This is a good example of .how, an immigrant' can easily be 'ma'rtlpuTared by another simply because ■ he '(the immigrant) is defenseless. A statement Editor, f.
