Maybe they got confused, and it was them playing against the 'Niners on Sunday... then again, I'd still take Fresno's defense over Atlanta's. Oh well, I could talk about the football team all day, but if I do, I'm gonna have to grab some more Maalox. Fortunately there were other big-time choking dogs in action to talk about... Bulldogs, to be exact. If you think the football team was a tease, you should have seen what the soccer team did. They needed to defeat two conference rivals last weekend, in order to keep conference title and NCAA tournament chances alive. Friday night, they played possibly their best game of the season, dominating San Jose State from the start clicking, something that hasn't happened often this year, but is always great to watch when it does. The excitement was short-lived, however. On Sunday, the 'Dogs could not find the net, and they were shut-out by Stanford, 2-0. Just like in the football game, the way the 'Dogs lost was just as unsettling as the loss itself. They played the first half to a scoreless tie, but in the second, showed what can happen when you just can't score. You lose. The loss particularly hurts because the 'Dogs needed to gain ground on Stanford, which is second in the conference. The loss dropped their conference record to 3-3, and last week Coach John Bluem said he thought it would take a 5-2 record within the conference record to win it. With these other two teams' All facets of the team were RUNNERS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 post-season chances evaporating, the volleyball team has to be a little nervous. It is actually in good shape right now, despite an ugly loss against BYU. The team had been tearing up opponents, butthelossbumpsihem ' to second place behind the Cougars. This sets up an interesting situation; the next two weeks will probably decide the winner. The 'Dogs will have home matches against conference rivals New Mexico, UTEP, and San Diego State. They need to kill these teams in order to set themselves up to bump BYU out of first place. Either way, let's hope they win or lose without the big roller coaster ride we were put through last weekend • - It's not that I don't like close, exciting matches; I'm outof money for laxatives. induced asthma and could not finish the race. Farage had an injury earlier in the season and is just how finding the form that contributed to her becoming the Big West runner-up According to Estes, Farage is progressing nicely and should be 100 percent whne the WAC and NCAA Region 7 meets take place Nov. 14. Evelyn Martino also is not 100 percent Despite the injuries, the women consistently go out and put out a strong effort "AH three of them should get the purple heart and bronze star \ward," Estes said. What will it take for the women to run a good race? "We need all five healthy to put together a good race," Estes said. The Bulldogs run a time trial on campus this weekend before returning to meet action Oct 31. WRIGHT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 inspirational players and leaders," Bluem said. "Wright was very good and very strong. His injury was a blow to the team." Now, Wright said, his goal is to get back on the field as quickly as his healing will allow. "I've been working ort improving my range, motion, and bending my leg," he said. And what about getting back to his level? Some players do, and others can never measure up to what they once were after a sidelining injury like this. "Sometimes I worry about it but really I don't" Wright said. "I can count on coming back to a higher level." "I'm determined to do it grit my teeth and go through the rehab process. To get back to where I was, I'm prepared to do that I don't in ink that will be a problem." His evaluation of this year's team without him is good, for the most part "Defensively, we're doing real well. Brianf ohnson [who replaced Wright] is very talented.and adapts wel!, considering he has not played my position. He has stepped in," Wright said. "I'm disappointed with our scoring. We've had bad luck and we're just not putting them in, "Ir/s unlucky we're in the situation we're in, but there's no reason why we shouldn't do it" said Wright on the'playoff chase. .The 'Dogs need to put together a winning streak to stay in contention. The option remains on whether Wright will return next year. He could redshirt this season and come back nextt year. According, to Bluem, "it's unclear whether he'll come back or\iot" Wright is scheduled to graduate intaay 1993.
