October 1,1992 The Daily Collegian Sports-7 There he goes:Ranker Malcolm Seabron takes off on a touchdown run during the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 39-37 toss. Freshman tennis player uses forehand cannon By Alex Aboud Staff Writer Moving into the WAC isn't the only thing new to the Fresno State tennis team this year. A new coach and eight new players have come to town, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and a brash attitude to this "politest" of sports. "I think we can win HH the WAC and get to the NCAA Championships. This is the first time I've had the resources to bring in my type of players and develop my kind of team," Coach Pete Smith said. One of Smith's type of players is freshman Bryan Juinio. While he may seem calm and cool around the court, Juinio plays with the type of fire Smith loves to see. "He's crazy ... he'll try the craziest, low-penjentage shots, and he'll get them in," Smith said. Most of the heat generated in Juinio's game comes from a smoking forehand, one which landed him the 25 th ranked player in the 16-and- under division in the United States. Smith's eyes light up when he talks about that forehand. "His forehand is a cannon. He whacks those balls so hard, it's amazing. He always keeps his opponents on their heels, never His forehand is a cannon. He whacks those balls so HARD, jfr's AMAZING. The baseline is the usual launching pad for Juinio's shots, but he occassional I y blisters a hard forehand at the neL "Hedoesn'tknow how good he is. While he doesn't go to the net much, I've seen him hit a drop shot and then follow with a rocket, right up at the net," Smith said. "He just needs to realize that he can do more than just play on the baseline. His serve, volley, and movement all compliment his fore hand." Another aspect Juinio brings to the court is his positive attitude. "I. am very relaxed on the court. I try to have a good time and stay cool," Juinio said. "Bryan's attitude is great. Heisn'tpHased when he loses a point. He focuses j on the next point and keeps his edge," Smith added. While Juinio is only one |of eight new players this year, his early performance has already made an impact Ton the team. "I think I can play somewhere around the five or six seed," Juinio said modestly. When Srtith heard that, he quickly exclaimed, "That's the problem. He just doesn't realize PLEASE SEE TENNIS, PAGE 8 Viewpoint Staff writer issues far FSU football team By Richard James After having watched the Fresno State football team fall to 2-2,1 started to do some thinking. If being on the football team was a class, what kind of grade would the team have up to this point? To answer that question, I put on my professor's hat and now have my official report card for the Bulldogs: Offense Quarterback-Sophomore quarterback Trent Dilfer is having a pretty good season so far, considering he is a sophomore. He has as mar.y interceptions as he does toufndown passes (six) and has completed just' under SO percent of his passes. He has amassed 914 passing yards. Mel Kiper Jr., a National Football League draft analyst for ESPN, has predicted Dilfer could be one of the top quarterbacks taken in the draft after his senior season. I agree. Dilfer will only get belter and I predict he'll leave here the best quarterback ever to play at FSU. Grade: B Running back-Dcspite totaling just 168 yards against a stingy Washington Slate defense, the Bulldog running attack is alive and well. Senior fullback Lorenzo Ncal has gained 381 yards while tailbacks Anthony Daigle and Ron Rivers have rushed for 268 and 209 yards, respectively. The three have combined for 10 touchdowns and also block well when asked to do so. Neal is one of the top fullbacks in the nation and needs to average 91.9 yards per game to break the school record for career rushing yardage. Grade: B Wide receiver-The receiving corps have been consistent as always. Malcolm Seabron is the leader with 355 yards on just 12 receptions. That's an average of just under 30 yards per catch. Tydus Winans has 226 yards and Michael Ross has 158. Any one of these guys could be. superstars at another school. But because FSU has so many weapons at the wide out position, their stats aren't that 'high. Grade: B+ Tight end-This is a strong position as well. Marty Thompson' and Jeff Arnold solidify this position. Both are catching the ball well and doing the job blocking. Grade: B Offensive line-The 0-1 ine 'is playing well despite being hit hard by injuries. Kenny Hall is out for the year after injuring his knee. The rest of the offensive line has been banged up but playing pretty well. Ron Collins, Josh Cold iron, Billy Scott, Rus Hartmann and Jesse Hardwick, along with the reserves, are playing well.
