'• - October 21,1992 -• / The Daily Collegian Op/Ed-3 JOBS RHETORIC: "It's the privatesector thai creates jobs." REALITY: Except during George Bush's Presidency. There were 35,000 fewer private sector jobs in September, 1992 than there were when Bush took office in January, 1989. [Bureau of Labor Statistics] GROW THE GOVERNMENT RHETORIC: Bush said several times that we must not" grow the government'' 1 REALITY: Under George Bush, federal employment has in¬ creased. The government now employes 65,803 more people tan itdid when he took office. Since FY 1989, the Executive branch has grown by more th% six percent [U.S. Budgets, FY 1991 and FY 1993] ♦Courtesy of the Clinton/Gor*1 campaign WOLF Continued from page 2 Additionally, the ASI used free advertising in The Daily Colle¬ gian to convince students to raise their ASI fees. The actions of the ASI were disgusting. The passive reaction of The Dai/y Collegian wasmuch worse. TheDaily Colle¬ gian, during the last three semes¬ ters, has looked the other way whenever the ASI or its actions have been considered question¬ able. So why should we care now? The handful of students that have worked harder than anyone else to expose the racism and clandestine actions of the ASI have had by¬ laws thrown out left and right when they wanted wrongs addressed. The ASI isn't accountable, even when every procedure outlined by its bylaws is followed by students who want change. The ASI has scavenged through its bylaws to piece together the few rules and regulations that it finds accept¬ able. We cant slop the ASI. Welty doesn't care. Corcoran doesn't care. Lundal doesn't care. No one on this campus cares what the ASI does—until the ASI cuts the money that their particular program 'needs.' Then people start to care. But by then it's too late. Not unlike a raging river that is left for decades to run its natural course, the ASI has flooded be¬ yond its banks and refuses to be contained by such trivial things as its own bylaws. We've got to dam the river and send these pickpockets straight to work in the Dean of Student Af¬ fairs office where their talents won't be wasted. The problem is that the only students who really care about all of the injustices committed by the ASI have thrown in the towel. You can write editorials all day lohg. But against a bureaucracy with the power of taxation and no commitments to an accepted or documented procedure, you will inevitably fail. The pen is mightier than the sword. But the ability to steal your enemies' pen is far mightier than the pen itself. } VOTING Continued from pace 2 on," out of focus, campaign slo¬ gans. These are just there to con¬ fuse the "voting" crowd, and basi¬ cally count fortiothing. So, to some how bring it all together, please, and try to understand, voting is important, especially in 1992. Everyone should vote to make things happen. But a vote should be made with sufficient backup if one wants to really make a ajffer- ence. These days Americans ought to go^out and exercise their rights, not abuse them.
