8-Sports The Daily Collegian October 27,1992 > SECOND CONTINUED FROM PACE 7 18 blocks and 10 aces. She has improved considerably in.two areas—blocks and aces. Prior to Sept. 25, She had just two flocks and six aces. Last weekend, she hit .391 with 29 digs, three blocks and two aces. The Lima, Peru native is third on the team in kills (207) and second in digs (201) and in aces (16). Middle blocker Suzie Regul is continuing her strong season. She leads the team in kills (272), hiuimj percentage (.269),Jcills per game (3.7), solo blocks (43) and total blocks (100). Regul set a school and WAC single-match record after recording nine solo blocks against. Utah Sept 12. In the same match she had a season-high 27 kills! FSU has faced the Mustangs once this season at San Luis Obispo, a match the Bulldogs won three games to one (15-13,15-9; 12-15,15-9). The Lady Mustangs will come to Fresno with a record of 15-6. Ironically, Cal Poly has been playing the best on the road, sporting a 7-3 record. They are just 1 -3 at home and 7-0 on neutral courts. . «■' Cal Poly is led by Lacl Per lsirom, who is leading the team in kills (225) and digs (207). The assists leaders are clear. The team as a whole has 953; Carrie Bartkoski and Anna Reategui have combined for 891 of them. That's 94£ercent of the teams assists. Banjcoski has 446 assists while Reategui has 445. After defeating the Mustangs earlier this season, head Coach Lindy Vivas won't make many adjustments. "Nothing drastic. Our outside blocking must be solid because their outside hitters had a good match against us,** Vivas said. —— Despite the fact Cal Poly is an independent, the Mustangs are still a tough team. "They play great defense, they're scrappy and their offense is faster than ours,** Vivas said. That will make for a pace the Bulldogs aren't used to. 'The pace will be faster—faster than we've faced since we played them," Vivas said. A key ingredient to FSU's success against the Mustangs will be concentration. "Athletes are athletes, coaching is coaching, and paperwork is paperwork—no matter what level.** At LSU, the team was weak when she arrived. "We had nothing, Irle said. "In two years, however, the team climbed to 20th and 14th in the rankings.** Irle is quick to point out she wasn't the only reason for the sudden success. "I credit the entire staff for that," she said."What we did at LSU we are going to uyjo do here. We built on our strength and eliminated the weaknesses. But I don't see this as a rebuilding job. This is a program that is continuing to build and has been steadily moving forward for the last three years. "I see my role as continuing that process and producing outstanding athletes,** Irle said. At Texas and LSU, she also had possibly the most important job in any program—the recruiter. x "When I was at LSU, that was the way we had to build, because we had to get more talent,** Irle said. "Your potential to improve is only as good as your recruits. So we put a big focus on improvement in recruiting better players. At Texas^we recruited the best in order to stay the best The majority of your success will come from getting top players to add.** With the season starting, what are the expectations and plans? "Early in the season, I don't expect anything flashy, just ^ood, solid performances. We'll still be putting it together, so we've got to be smart, think,'and do the little things right The speed will be there at the end,** Irle said. And she has her own plan for bringing success to the Bulldogs. "We are continuing to build this program, and the process started Jliiree years ago. The previous coach [Terri McKeever] did a great job and I don't want to take anything away from her. We will make recruiting a huge focus and continue to recruit better athletes to this program. I demand self-discipline and that you give 100 percent all the time, not just some of the time. That's something I demand of myself, so I expect my ' team to do the same. The harder and better I work, the harder and better they will work. That, ultimately, leads to success.** HONORS COWTWUIP FROM PA1 7 Soldan's season. "She started being effective in the match against Arizona State the week before we started WAC play," Vivas said. Vivas attributed Paz-Soldan's slow start partially to the attempt to make Paz-Soldan a good all- around player. "I think her hitting suffered [while she worked on other parts Jbif her game],** Vivas said. "But now everything's starting to make sense, to her." Safety Tommy Jones was also nominated for the award. He received votes after having his best game this season. Jones posted two interceptions and a fumble interception.
