I don't know many girls who, in their youth, didn't at one time or another look at her and think, "I want to be just like her.'' Lord knows I'm still reaching for that GJ. Joe status. Barbie's an institution and to pick and choose what she will and won't have to fit our own likes and dislikes is kind of petty in the face of what Barbie really is. To curtail Barbie now would be to show up at the opera late and expect them to start over just for you. Perhaps it would be wise for a toy manufacturer, say, femtel, to create this "Plane [sic] Jane" doll and see how far she gets. Take i away the imagination of the children and get them down to real¬ ity. I person¬ ally can't stand it when kids look to the skies and won¬ der how hard they would have to jump to hit the moon, the little maggots, Of all the nerve. Give them real jobs and tell them to worry about what's going on in Washington D.C. Am I getting my point across? We adults get the Qub Meds and the Spring Breaks full of beer and bikinis. When we're sitting in our offices looking at secretaries in tight skirts or at dancers in Chip- I CAN ALREADY HEAR THE LOT OF YOU CRYING FOUL — YOUR BASIC INSTINCT. the children that directly pisses them off. That's the kind of stop- and-go traffic in society thatcauses too many "accidents''. Now what I'm thinking is going to take some real stretching from all of you technisists [sic] out there. But I think that the children need those stereotypes to deal with as kids. At least that's black and white. Children don't have the capabilities to distinguish what is prejudice, granted. And i t co uld be seen that what a Barbie is or says can lead diem into chauvinism. The children want to be what most likely isn't going to happen. They want to have what they aren't going to get. If a little girl wants to sit with her friends and play house, to cook and clean house while their imaginary hus¬ bands are at work, let them do it We did it, didn't we? I did. I mar¬ ried a dozen times right up until the eighth grade. And too many people out there, including my¬ self, now know that the best mar¬ riages we had were in our youths. How many little boys are out there running around playing sol¬ dier? A make believe game with terrifying real results. No girl gets her head blown off for failing math. But some of those kids playing' army are going to die someday on the battle field. That we can be sure of. But are they crying about that? No, they want to take away only the part of the imagination of worried about profits than the great role they have played with Barbie. Even having a lover or a dating relationship doesn't satisfy society's primitive hunger for matrimony. The relationship and the woman are only important when the couple marry. You don't need a partner to be a valid person. If a woman is heterosexual, then she should wait until the right man comes along. She shouldn't feel pressured to grab the first guy she has a rela¬ tionship with. Create a family with your friends. Learn to love being with -yourself and doing things with other women. Remember, mar¬ riage is not the end all, be alL Start to feel comfortable being alone. It can be a wonderful feeling and is something rarely experienced. All men are not the same. Feminist men do exist. I know. I married a man who is more of a feminist than I am.
