New African American students were greeted at the door of Cafeteria West on Wednesday, September 9, 1992 with hearty handshakes and warm welcomes. As students gathered informally to eat, drink and meet, the faculty and staff stressed words of wisdom for black col¬ lege students which set the tone for the school year with pleasant, sociable atmos¬ phere for the evening. New and returning students were introduced and told of the resources avail¬ able to them for their academic success. The college experience is very important," said BFS A Vice-President Dr. Adewole Umoja. "It is the crossroads in life. The fundamental learning you will gain from this experience is important for improved interaction." Umoja also expressed the black stu¬ dents' role for others. "Struggle to make things better for 1 yourselves and those who come behind ypu. Let your model be a path for your destiny, Umoja said." j Invovlement was another empha¬ sized necessity for black students to slay ahead of relative campus issues. "Come to get on issues of substance, those on campus are willing to support you," Umoja said. As the Welcome Black Orientation eventually melted down. A calm, cool ice cream social, sponsored by the African Student Union, finisned off the evening as dessert. African American Student Enrollment may effect WASC University accreditation By Teresa Gipson Uhuru Staff Every ten years CSU, Fresno is re^ viewed by a team from the Western Asso¬ ciation of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The WASC evaluates curriculum, overall environment and sets strict guidelines in order for a college to receive it's accredita¬ tion. This year marks the end of a long ten years for many students, faculty, and staff. Although there has been positive change, the change has been slow. Student leaders have asked for the administration to be responsive to the needs of the African American community on this campus. \ The Black Faculty and Staff Associa¬ tion (BFS A) presented a proposal to Presi¬ dent Wclty and his administration asking for the "creation of a Black Retention/ Recruitment Center." The center would expand its recruitment of African Ameri¬ can students to Southern and Northern California and/provide comprehensive re¬ tention services tailored to the specific needs of African American students. There have been some advancements in the last decade. We have seen more repre¬ sentation in government, implementation of African American theater, and more black faculty and staff. Many of these victories were results of students mobiliz¬ ing at the grassroots level. Of concern is the proportion of change that has occurred. Out of the 237 African Americans who applied for admission in 1991,139 students were admitted and 74 actually enrolled. Because the campus environment is^till one of racial insensitiv- ity, cultural ignorance, the BFS A has pro¬ posed to President Welly detailed strate¬ gies to "empower students to become inde¬ pendent learners," and retain staff and fac¬ ulty. A new chapter has been added to the WASC's requirement of being an accred¬ ited school. In order to receive accredita- . tion, a school must show diversity which means equal representation of all ethnici¬ ties in student, faculty and staff population. African American students make up 4.3% of the CSUF population. According to the Office of Institutional Research, this figure has risen point-seven- percent since Please see ENROLLMENT page 4 "
