FSU faces SDSL) tonight at 7:30. Spikers try lo stop slide ot talented Son Diego State By Dave Donnelly Sports Editor The Fresno State women's volleyball team's fifth win ofine season left head coach Lindy Vivas two winsshort of 100 for her career. That was two weeks ago. As the spikers (5-6) prepare to face the San Diego State Aztecs (13-2) in their first ever WAC match tonight at 7:30 p.m. in SDSU's Peterson Gym, Vivas is still waiting for the win that will give her No. 100- The Bulldogs have lost-four straight and five out of the last nine matches. Despite the losses, head coach Lindy Vivas remains positive. "I think it's mainly because I believe we have the talent, we just haven't shown it," Vivas said. "If we didn't have the, talent that be a difficult situation." If the Bulldogs are to turn it around, one person they will look to is Paola Paz-Soldan. Paz-Soldan came in out of shape but has started to reach the level she did last year and none to soon. v "She played her best match on Saturday night [against Arizona State]," Vivas said. "She has. lo continue working hard, keep trying to get in better shape and be a lot more consistent than she is. She did a lot better job Saturday nigtit than any previous match. So, maybe it's all clicking in and she's realizing what 'she has to do." Also, Vivas said she hasn' t seen any evidence that the team's confidence is down. "Well, I think they're okay," Vivas said. "They seem to be; we know we have to play well to win on any given night. The main priority is for us to woory about our side of the court right now and perform like we should Last season the Bulldogs went toSan Diegoand lost in four games. The Bulldogs have defeated the Aztecs once in 16 matches. The Aztecs lead the all-time series 13- 1-2. According to Lindy Vivas, the Aztecs should be as formidable as last season. "San Diego State has been playing pretty well this year," Vivas said. "I don't believe their schedule has been as tough as ours. On paper they look better as far as win-loss. "They've got some good players. Grade Schutt is a very good leftside hitter. She's their" main player and she gets most of their sets. Right now I think she's hitting close to five kills per game and she's got a high hitting average. That's really good tor a leftside hitter." However, that is not the only person the Aztecs can turn to. . "They've got a couple of good middles, Jennifer Miller and Stephanie Riley, who has experience," Vivas said. I believe it was Jennifer Miller last year who hurt us. 'They're a good team. They^re scrappy; they seem to have real smart hitters. They don't always put the ball straight down, but they hitoff the block and they hitseams. They constantly frustrate theother teams. "We have to play a smart game." Outside hitter Andrea Radmilovich is looking forward to getting another shot at the Aztecs. ; "It's our last chance to beat them at home," Radmilovich said. "Since'I've been here we've gone down there two or three times and we haven't done it." This is the last game of a three- game home stand. It will be the last non-conference game for the FSU 'Dogs. FSU continues WAC play for the rest of the season with a match-up with B YU next week. If the Bulldogs thought the Cougars were big and tough, Head Coach Jim Sweeney says the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are even bigger. "They are a brutally big team on both sides of the ball and they will be a much tougher team to block," Sweeney said. "We have to do a better job blocking." Sophomore quarterback Trent Dilfer knows he'll have his work cut out for him when he faces the LTU defense. "The team we play this week is defensively better than Washington State," Dilfer said. Speaking of defense, FSU has gottogettheirs together. The 'Dogs gave up more than 530 yards to the Washington State Cougars and it may get worst when the Bulldogs continue WAC play. § • Sweeney plans to try a new defensive look on Saturday but scoring nationally. Both Dilfer and Malcolm Seabron are two of the reasons there has been no letdown for the offense after the last two seasons, when the Bulldogs were one of the was hoping to wait for B YU.
