October 15,1992 The Daily Collegian Op/Ed-S 7 MONEY Continued from page 2 was the initiative of its members, and not the mandatory ASI fees that each of us pay, that funded the project. . The actions and initiative of Pi Sigma Epsilon and its members are remarkably refreshing. Doz- ens of programs and organizations on this campus exist simply be¬ cause their members have con¬ vinced different 'bureaucratic' ^governmental bodies on this cam- \ pus^that they "need" funding. In fact, it is the mentality of a thief or a looter that money ob¬ tained through die mandatory taxar tion of all students be distributed lo clubs and organizations/ But Pi Sigma Epsilon, one of the few organizations on this campus that is not sinking into the quicksand of ASI subsidies and handouts, was chastised on this very page as recenUy as yesterday for their ingenuity. And the complaint? The calen¬ dar is sexist. It degrades and ex¬ ploits women. Here's a news flash for those of you who are still buying this in¬ sane, "all men are bastards" line of thinking: Not onp of those women in that calendar appears to have the barrel of a shotgun shoved in the small of her back. If you've seen the calendar, and it* s a damn fine calendar, you know that each photo is much more taste¬ ful than the "Men of Cal State Fresno" calendar that was banned from the library last year. It's hard to believe that certain members of yTheJ^aily Collegian staff didn't like the calendar. And the women are wearing a much greater percentage of cloth¬ ing than die calendar full of men. Go to Mencius tonight, and watch die attractive, young ladies who will strip at lO?bo. At the end of the night, approach one of the women and ask them if they feel exploited. I can guarantee the fol¬ lowing response: "No, I'm not being exploited. I'm walking home with $400 in cash, and those guys are going home with nothing. They're the ones getting exploited." PSE, a national marketing fra- * \y ternity, has produced and marketed an excellent product. However, the only marketing £irov that PSE , made was expecting to get the same type of news coverage from • The Daily Collegian that is granted unto any issue or situation that surrounds women's\ or - homosexual's rights. Yeah, I wrote it Don't look astonished. Just like in Animal Farm, all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. This is apparent to anyone who follows the news coverage in The Daily Collegian . -P » It is eerily ironic^th^t anyone j who draws their very existence from such a heavily-subsidized entity as The Daily Collegian could possibly criticize the efforts of Pi Sigma Epsilon. The success of the "Women of Fresno State" calendar should be monumental. And even more monumental will be the realiza¬ tion of the campus community that there are still those who expect to receive the rewards of this world by the measure of their achieve¬ ments and labor, and not by the extent to which they can stuff their hands into the purses and wallets of the community. * To each according to his abil¬ ity. And Pi Sigma Epsilon has proven its ability. The rewards of its efforts should not be criticized and ridiculed, but glorified. And PSE's progress should be regarded as a goal for every other campus organization that still in¬ sists on the mandatory taxation of the whole student body to support its activities.
