Bongo is posted on Suzic Regul's bedroom door in her apartment In The California^ complex on Bulldog Lane. You could say Bongo, Infamously , known for the Life In Hell' cartoon strips, represents Regul's situation when reporters come knocking. \. Regul. a member of the F*resno State women's volleyball team, despises the dreaded interview with those evil media types. Life becomes hell. She finds ways to ease her anxiety. \ Whether it's picking up a guitar, midnight cookie making, or engaging in video games. Suzle Regul finds a way to relieve the stress. f Her life may not be as stressful as a broker on the New-York Stock Exchange.-btft 19-year-old Suzle Regul's role as a Bulldog can get tense. She can handle courses, like physics and zoology - as her 3.5 GPA would illustrate. But when It comes down to an interview with an unfamiliar person, or "person of authority" as she put It. it's stressballtn' time; Regul, a 6-1 sophomore middle blocker for the Bulldogs, struggles with interviews. However. If Regul continues her consistent domination on-the court - first In total blocks and second in kills for FSU - she's bound to be faced with more reporters. After our talk Monday evening. Regul. a product of San Jose's Prospect High, was immediately ready to grab her guitar and work those strings. "I haven't figured it out I don't know why she's so shy toward Interviews." said Dr. Suzanne Regul, Suzle's mother. "Maybe she's afraid of saying something dumb. "I also don't think she likes the attenUon or being labeled a star." added Dr. Regul. a gynecologist "She i enjoys Just being one of the team, rather than being singled out" Suzle singled herself out Saturday at Cal State Fullerton as she recorded a^career-high 20 kills In the Bulldogs' victory. She's second on the team with 186. an average of three kills a game. Regul leads Fresno State in the blocks department with 65. including 11 solo blocks. FSU. entering tonight's Big West Conference battle at Pacific with an 8-9 record, will need Regul at her best against the No. 3 Tigers. With its win over the Titans. FSU is already 3-3 in the Big West, equalling Its league win total of a season past (p-15). Regul Is one reason why the 'Dogs are remaining in contention for an NCAA post-season berth. Regul's success this season is even more sweet, following a year when she recorded a measly 14 kills in 10 games. In 1989 Regul was nagged with a sore right elbow due to bone chips. She decided to make sure 1990 wasn't another disappointment. "My goal was to start the right side." she said. "1 worked real hard in the summer. I kept in shape and played numerous toiim amen is." When she came back. Regul* said people ware surprised. They Just kind of drooled." she said. "No. I'm just kidding." Yes. Regul does have a sense of humor -especially during the nervousness of an Interview. She also feels the number of kills she has is meaningless. The Bulldogs finished behind national powers Arkansas. Arizona and Wake Forest, who entered the Invitational ranked second, third and ninth tn the nation respectively. while Stanford and UC-Santa Barbara finished fifth and sixth. Lienau. who won the individual title at the Hawaii Invitational two weeks ago. finished 16th in a field of 110 runners Saturday, while teammates NetT McChte (28th). Gilbert Delgado (32nd). Jim Zimmer (48th) and Todd Shelter (57th) also paced Fresno to Its respectable sixth place finish. Other Bulldog runners to finish were Keith VTdetto (70th). Kelly Dodge (93rd) and David Naranjo (97th). The Bulldogs, who have won two of the three lnvitatlonals they have competed in this year, will travel to the . Cal-Poly San ' Luis Obispo Invitational this Saturday. , The Fresno State women's team also competed.at the Stanford Invitational and finished 11th. The race featured four of the top 15 teams In the nation. Wisconsin (No. 6), BYU (No. 7). Arkansas (No. 8) and UC-Irvlne (No. 12). Cindy Rockwood-Amster continued as the top Bulldog finisher by placing 32nd. Rockwood-Amster. Fresno State's tap woman cross country runner in 1989. has finished 12th and second In her only other two races In 1990. Other top Bulldog finishers were Julie Verke (48th), Betty Chavez (51st). Shannon Leader, the FSU record holder In the 800 meters. (60th) and I"welynI»tautiiao(68th). The women will also be competing in the Cal-Poly SLO Invitational Saturday in San Luis Obispo.
