THE GOOD NEW IS* GEORGES HAS A I remember my sister's blood By Frank Pancho Aviles Today I was reading the newspaper and it was red again. Sometimes when I look at the newspaper, it brings back ugly memories. I remember when my brother and I were digging in my sister Teresa's trash, we found a newspaper with blood on it. I told my mother about the bloody newspaper and she told me the blood was from my sister's period. She told me that my sister's husband, Carl, made her use newspaper instead of Kotex. My brother thought it was funny. He said, "Should we save the funnies ot the sports for her for next month?" My brother didn't think that it was that big a deal, but I knew it was. Ever since my sister got married at age 17, her life begin to change. Before she was married, she wouldn't leave the house without fixing her hair, putting on makeup or nice clothes. She was always going out with friends too. When she was 17, she thought (hat she was pregnant So she had to marry her boy¬ friend, Carl, one of the cutest athletes in school. A few weeks after she was married she found out she wasn't really pregnant. Doctors said it was a mistake or false alarm. Nonetheless, she was married and Carl added new rules to her life. She was no longer allowed to cut her hair, wear makeup, shave any body hair, use Clearasil, or use shampoo. He also made her get rid of all her clothes. Only months after her marriage she seemed like a completely different person. Her hair was always greasy because her shampoo was replaced with body soap. Even though she wasn't pregnant, she only wore maternity clothes or polyester flair pants. (Carl bought her this clothes at the swapmeet) And whenever she got pimples, he would put toothpaste, Crest, on them at night. She would sometimes say that the Crest burned. She also became very thin because he monitored her food intake. He also refused to let her talk to any of her friends. At one point my older brother beat the shit out of Carl and brought Teresa back to the house. My dad convinced her that she could go back to school and put this marriage behind Letters to the Editor her. Unfortunately, months later her stomach begin to grow. When Carl found out she was pregnant, he would come to visit her and my dad felt he had to allow this. My dad didn't want the child to grow up without a father. Eventually, Carl convinced my sister to go back with him. After she had the baby her life became an even worse night¬ mare. The doctors told her that the baby had mild Down's syndrome and that if she had any more kids there was a fifty* / fifty chance of them having Down's syndrome. Despite the doctor's warning, Carl wanted more children, at least four more. My sister, tried to take birth control pills, but eventually Carl found out and threw the pills away. For three years my sister lived with the fear of getting pregnant and having a baby she didn't want *' Once when my sister, Linda, spent a night at Teresa's house, she saw something terrible. She said that she walked into the living room while Carl was forcing Teresa to have sex with him. In fact, he placed a pillow over Teresais face while raping her. Teresa told Linda not to tell anyone. After living in fear for about four or five years, she finally decided lb leave her husband. After she left him, he hunted her down. When he couldn't get her back, he took her child. The only way she could get her child back was to live with him again. Because she wanted her child, she went back to him. That night she let him have sex with her and she pretended she liked it. In the morning when he went to work she took her child and ran to my parents' house. Although he harassed her for a few years, she is now free from him and has a new life. Right now my sister is partially free, but there are a lot of women out there that are still living in bondage. Women are being mentally, physically, and economically abused everywhere. Women are being beaten and mutilated every day and our society is J lowing this. We need to realize that violence against women is not okay. And we need to realize that my sister's blood is everyone's blood. Mr. Aviles is a columnist for The Deity CoUegian. Heterosexuals are not better than lesbians You've picked a fine time to misquote me in The Collegian, joe M. Torres. I'm in the middle of finals. I have assignments due, totaling over 40 pages, and I certainly resent having to take time out in order to correct your mistakes. I feel I have no choice but to respond to your mistakes as The Collegian would not take the responsibility in doing so since it was not an editorial mistake, but a writer's misrepresentation of ait informant So here, I am informing the readers of TheCollegian that you Mr. Torres, unfortunately, misquoted *e presentation Ix had delivered to the audience that attended the violence against women's discussion panel on Monday night. I was there representing the lesbian community and respond¬ ing specifically to the violence that is directed at the lesbian (bashing) that is based on heterosexism which is in definition the ideology t ha t heterosexual relationships are superior to other types of relationships. That statement . was never fieant to be taken out of context by simply quoting the definition without the term and reason I was defining it. To all the lesbians and gays on campus and to those that do not tolerate hate Crimea or statements that promote such crimes, please accept this corrected version of the state¬ ment 1 actually made. And in the future, Mr. Torres, think logically and critically when writing a story. A lesbian, in most circumstances, would not make the statement that hetero¬ sexual relationships are-superior to other relationships. To the other misquotes you made in your article, splicing fragments of my discussion together, I do not have the time to respond to; and although you made me sound as though I thought love would take care of violence, I'll ignore it because that idea is not harmful to the community I proudly associate myself with. However, I can't believe, I wished you had, you didn't quote me as saying the follow¬ ing: a certainly, in the United States of America will not grieve the loss of my sexual orienta¬ tion." Quoting that would have delighted me and would have given The CoUegian reader's something to think about. Happy Finals Mr. Torres, Kelly Jantzen
