• \ Spqrts Vieupdint Wss»sssMs1s»Mi1M^s^^r Growi By Chris Cocoles The careers of Fresno State's football seniors come to an end Saturday, and when FSU plays its first 1992 game as Western Athletic Conference members, it sure will be strange not to see those guys running up and down the green grass of Bulldog Stadium. In a way, I've grown up with Mark Barsotti, Marquez Pope and the rest of the Bulldog class of 1991. I arrived in Fresno in 1989, but the seniors started making their mark one year earlier. Mark Barsotti was a relative unknown outside of the Central Valley, where he led Madera High School to a rare section up wi The Daily Collegian • December 10, 1991 . *r ,*.- -v ■. - ' :>. > . • •. * .••. •' * IT • * . •*.--*/ " ■■ : - the seniors at 7 .. title. He was a redshirt freshman in 1988 and was expected to sit behind returnee Dave Telford. Barsotti had other ideas though. The youngster impressed Coach Jim Sweeney enough to give him the Bulldog offense. Barsotti started FSU's opener against New Mexico. 68 points later an era began that may never be matched again at Fresno State. He passed for 221 yards in that game, statistics that were typical Mark Barsotti, not real flashy but real effective Number 11 always does what it takes to get the job done. Not that he didn't struggle during his four years. Even Kevin Sweeney had an occa¬ sional bad game, as he does ■----------■■ today in the broadcast booth. But Barsotti has turned himself into a pro prospect, even after that unfortunate afternoon inLasCruces. I don't know too many collegiate quarterbacks who have done more in four years than Marie Barsotti. Even before coming to Fresno State, I knew something about the character of Marquez Pope. When the Bulldogs took on Western Michigan in the California Bowl (without the raisins), ESPN was nice enough to televise the game Late in the third quarter, FSU took the lead and on the ensuing kickoff, the returner was taken down deep in Bronco territory. "What a play,' shouted the announcer (I think it was Steve Physioc or some other "talented" sportscaster). Unfortunately, the tackier pointed his finger at the kick returner and was promptly penalized 15 yards, by some old man in a striped shirt. - -He's a freshman. He'll leam,' said the sportscaster. A few plays later, the same kid forced a fumble that was recovered by FSU, setting up the Bulldogs' clinching touchdown. Can you guess who that fast- learning freshman was? Any¬ one? Anyone? Anyone? No, not Ferris Buellers It was Marquez Pope. How many times has Pope help decide a Fresno State football game since then? How many games has he played in? Like Barsotti, Pope will be playing on Sundays next season. along with fellow seniors Melvin Johnson, Tony Brown, and Kelvin Means, among others. Ill miss all the seniors though. Emery Braxton and Lance Dueker and Judd Foell and Keland Jackson and Aaron Leach and Steve Lee and Brad Seagle and Jeff Thiesen and anyone who I failed to say goodbye to. The senior class has one more victim to send home And every successful WAC season in the future will not only be credited to Trent Dilfer, Ron Rivers and Zack Rix, but to the Fresno State players of the past, who were responsible for getting the college football world's attention in the first place. On Friday, David Noble took first in the 200 freestyle with a school-record 1:39.31. Teammate Garrett Nishimoto broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke by .02 seconds with a 2.-05.84. McKeever said the Bulldogs got more than they bargained for in Long Beach...but not too much more. "We went down there hoping to swim the best times of the season and, hopefully some personal bests," she said, "we had a lot of people swim well - not just the one's who broke school records." In the relay events, LaBonte, Tristan, Vicki Binns and Kelli Af- feldt swam a school-record 1:41.75 in the 200 medley while LaBonte, Binns, Tristan and Furman swam a 358.68 in the 400 medley*- another school record.
