'Dogs lose to West Virginia 61- 57 BV LEE PASSMORE Ctt^ports Editor Hope always springs eternal in sports but it does not win ball games, as the Fxsno Slate men's basketball team is painfully aware. For the 29th time in the last 30 games on the read, the Bulldogs came up just short of victory, falling 61-57 to West Virginia at Morgantown, WV Thursday night. FSU fell to 1-3 on the season but showed positive signs against the Mountaineers of West Virginia following a disheartening 16-point loss at Louisiana Tech two nights earlier. The 'Dogs actually got out to a sizable lead early in the contest before losing control and falling behind for good. After falling far behind in.thc second half. FSU mounted an inspired rally to give the Mountaineers and their faithful a.bit of a scare. Still, old cliches like close doesn't count and potential doesn't win ball games certainly fit in this case "Once they get a lead here they switch defenses and really get-tough," said FSU coach Ron Adams to broadcasters after the game of the Mountaineers' home court excellence. At the outset, il looked as if the "Dogs were totally oblivious to the pressures of playing on the road. They burst out to a 10-3 lead, sparked by six points from Jervis Cole, who led all scorers with 21 points. West Virginia went on a 12-0 spurt which was highlighted by eight points from freshman guard Chris Leonard off the bench, including two three-point baskets. Neither team in reality was very impressive offensively. West Virginia struggled shooting the ball in the first several minutes while Fresno Slate Mad trouble holding on to the ball and commuted 13 turnovers in the first half. The most damaging Bulldog mistake came at the end of the half. FSU trailed 23-18 as the Mountaineers brought the ball up the court and played for the final shot of the half. West Virginia missed a long outside shot and Derrick Barden rebounded for the 'Dogs. However, Barden got careless with the ball and was stripped by Mountaineer guard Steve Bergcr, who released a shot from beyond three-point range at the tuzzcr rL?d cin.rxd iL The Moutaisecrs led 26-18 at intermission. "Wc did not move to the ball well in the first half," said Adams. "Our starting unit was slower than I thought it would be." Please sec HOOP, nagc 7 FSU swimmers to host San Franciscostate BV LEE PASSMORE . -Co-Sports Editor Fresno State's men's and women's swimming teams go back into heavy action this weekend after enjoying the last two weeks out of the water. Both of FSUs squads will hit the Fresno State pool at 4 p.m. today in a coed meet with San Francisco State. Then with almost no rest, the two squads will travel lo compete separately againsl the Universily of California at Berkeley Saturday. The Fresno State women will dive into competition against Cal at noon to¬ morrow while the men wil! start ai ! p.m. FSU's women"6\vn a 3-0 dual meet record going into today's meet They most recently cruised to victory at home over San Jose State by a 222-44 margin. The FSU men are 1-0. San Francisco State is a Division II school which1 sports championship caliber swimmers on the women's squad. The top female swimmer for SF State is Gina Pretti, a two-time All-Amftrican who holds two school records in. breaststroke events. Two other All- Americans are present for the San Francisco women in Gina Indrcsano, a 1988 selection who holds five school records in three events and Lori Pritchcti, a 1986 All-Amcrican who has school records in two relay events. For the FSU men, the meet has special meaning to head coach Harold Zane. "San Francisco State is a sentimental meet for mc since I coached there for six years," said Zane. "We haven't lost to them since I've been ai Fresno Slate and I'd like to sec us win Ihis one." This will also be the first meet where the men will be at full strength since the athletes who !so play water polo will be able to swim. "Everybody on my team is ready and healthy," said Zane. The meet against Cal one day later figures to be a much tougher test for both lhe men and women. Cal is generally considered to be one of the best schools for water Sports in the entire naiion. "They're one of the premier swimming programs in the nation, if not the world, said Zane. "It will be a good chance for us to see how wc measure up againsl one of the finest swimming schools." As far as the women's team is concerned, coach Tcri McKeever concurs with Zane. "They're definitely one of ihe best teams in the naiion and I think ii will be great competition for us," said McKeever. "Ml giv,c us a chance to sec how wc swim against ihat caliber of a program. It will point out our strengths and weaknesses, so wc can adjust" The FSU women will fortunately have their top rctuming swimmer back this weekend in Paige Campbell, who missed the last meet against San Jose because of a .shoulder injury.
