Page 2 Thursday, December J Thel>*iIluCauegian Childish actions lessen Editorial We all know that a week ago the ASI held closed session. The subjejaf was using student body money to hire a lawyer to examine a controversial case involving the AS at San Jt5se State tjn"i- versity. ASI Senator of Graduate Studies Jim Ireland . protested the meeting being closed and sub¬ sequently informed a Collegian reporter about it. ASI president Scott Vick sharply criticized \ his divulgence and labeled him "unethical." After demanding (and not receiving) an apology from Vick and some mild pouting, Ireland decided a few days ago to quit One would believe that we have an ASI senate that allocates more energy and lime to fighting and denigrating each other than they do about taking care of more serious and per¬ tinent business. Clearly, it seems strange to use our money to hire a lawyer and not make what they do~ with this money known to the student body. When the student senate is using student mon¬ ey, the students have a right to know about it And for Vick to portend that he is a bastion of ethics all of sudden is fake and superficial. Vick could have just as easily used the oppor¬ tunity to explain his reasoning for closing the meeting and even used some leadership skills to try to bring consensus to the situation. Jtjistead.. Vick opted for imniature and silly behavior to-prove that he was rigft even if it is at the expense of his dignity. Conversely, Ireland didn't receive an apology from Vick sq he is resigning from the senate. Apparently devotion and commitment to the students goes only as far as a mildly bruised ego. While Ireland could have tried to work out his problems with Vick, he instead decided to Opinion senate publicly \demand an apology from him. )viously, cornering Vick in such a fashion accomplished nothing. So what the student body is left with is com¬ ments from their representatives such as Vick saying "This senator will not fool the students by his own foolish behavior." Meanwhile, Ireland states "At this point our relationship has deteriorated tci an all-time low. I can't work with Scott." Is this the kind of student senate CSUF stu¬ dents elected to positions of power and re¬ sponsibility to handle student affairs? Somehow, someway, the ASI better leam how to work and cooperate with each other so serious work can be accomplished instead of immature babbling. Shouldn't the ASI be perceived as a body of responsible and proficient senators and not simply vindictive and childish individuals? After all, of all people, senators should know that the art of politics is compromise. Unfortunately, the bins are a good distance from the cen¬ ter of campus, wheriTa whole lot of dis¬ posing goes on. All these newspapers, bottles and cans would stand a much bet¬ ter chance of winding up in a recycling bin if it were a Utile more convenient to the conscientious disposer. Fresno is, after all, the land of convenience. One grows very quickly accustomed to having everything close at hand here. Smaller, more sightly cans could be made more accessible and lugged off daily to be dumped in one of the big bins. The soda can collectors could have them first- come, first-serve, rather than rummaging through garbage cans. 1 think people would be willing to make a little effort if the school would bring it within their reach.
