Michael ex¬ pects the company to net over $70,000 and the company employs four male and four female dancers (Mermly is quick say that she actually earns $5 an hour, based on the amount of time she puts into the business). Merrily, however, does a large bulk of the dancing and Michael performs as well. She says counting the time involved in performing behind-the-scenes tasks would make their rate of pay $5 per hour. Stripping allows for creative energy to be released. Merrily says. Her bedroom is crowded with costumes, most of which she made by hand for the stage. "This is a matter of self-expression, my philosophy of life, years of studying and working, and pulling together ideas," she says. "I can't do this for somebody else." V Merrily wears a large Wond wig while performing. Red, brunette and gold ones are used on various occasions. "it sparks a little imagination, a little fantasy," in the crowd, she says. "Maybe it does something for me," she continued. "It wouldn't be as much fun. It wouldn't have that creativity. It would look too ordinary. I don't want to look ordinary. I want to look, like somebody they wouldn't see everyaay." Dancers have to fact nights when they just don't feel like bearing their flesh in front of total strangers. It is these times that they rely on their other talents. "Act. Train yourself to act sexy," says Merrily, who claims to always be in the mood to do this part of her job. "I never, never feel like not doing this," she said. "The only time I don't feci like doing this is if they're real young and I don't think they'll like me, or some¬ thing like that "If I don't think that they 're going to be receptive to me personally because they have other expectations, then we have other girls. Different people for different situations. "I want them to feel good about what they're celebrating. That's what I'm there for. That's what I try to da It's not me. My feelings are just an implement. Just part of the act. What Tm using them for is to make other people feel good." "Guys look down on me when Tm do¬ ing the floor show at a bachelor party-." In the physical sense.." someone says. "Maybe in the mental sense," Merrily continues. "I don't know, they like it ."I know its a stigmatized ihing...but it's more like educating yourself and other people about something. About dancing, about feeling comfortable with bodies." The McCarthys have taken tbe semest¬ er off horn their classes to devote more time to tbe business, but are registered for spring classes. Ivierrily majors in crim¬ inology and Michael in business. Both have attended CSUF for four semesters. Merrily would not be faulted for setting a cut-off date for her dancing, but she isn't, especially with the business provid¬ ing the same sensations it did back in the San Francisco days. "I still get -scared, just about different things," she said. 1 wonied s*br5bt'how they were going to look at me, and know I worry about what I've got to say and if I'm going to say it oorrectly." "Michael can drag me on stage in a body bag and maybe if he plays some music for me. 111 get up and dance if he pulls the right strings. "I can't quit, that's the thing. I cannot quit.
