- - Page 4 Tuesday. November 1. 1968 The Dally CoOegkm - , AFROTC CootiMcd from page 1 Homing said, 'We appreciate the sup¬ port we got from the campus and the lo¬ cal community, and encourage students who might be interested in the Air Force option if they are interested in il (a career in the Air Force] after graduation." In order for the CSUF unit to remain intact, Sullivan said, it is necessary that "the number of people in this unit stays high, and then we don't have any danger of closing." The Air Force ROTC is having prob¬ lems in recruiting people. Sullivan explained that the "word got to everybody that we were closing, but the ward did not get out that we were go¬ ing to be here." "We were hurt by the closure news, our recruiting efforts were hurt; it will take us years [lo overcome it]," Sullivan aid. Sullivan said that at the present time there are 91 students in the Air Force ROTC program, but "traditionally we had 110 to 120 students." The aim of the Air Force ROTC, according to Sullivan, is to try to get the number of students up to 110 to 120 by the year 1990. One way the Air Force ROTC recruits people is by advertising. Sullivan explained that the advertising for the Air Force "is done by a single ad¬ vertising agency that docs advertising near local attachments." The local attach¬ ments, according to Sullivan, don't have any control over what goes into the adver¬ tisements. As a result the campus Air Force ROTC is having problems in advertising because it cannot specify what should be advertised and, Sullivan said, in the ads shown in the valley, "I can'L.tell people we an open," At the moment in its effort lo recruit fludrrsB, emphasis is being placed on at¬ tracting engineering, and especially nurs¬ ing students of which there is a general shortage of in the Air Force. In order to attract nurses, the Air Force ROTC is offering up to three and a half yean of scholarship to qualified nursing students who can apply for scholarships before they are accepted. Sullivan said that the local Air Force ROTC should not be hurt in the future. not even by the outcome of the Nov- ember presidcaatial cloctions. "No matter who gets elected, the decision will be the same [the Air Force ROTC will remain open]. We in ROTC are not very much affected by politics. The Defense Department is, but we as a single entity are not," Sullivan said. Students who enroll in the Air Force ROTC, according to Sullivan, are taught leadership and management skills. While enrolled in the program. Sullivan said, students get "hands-on experience of lead¬ ing or being led.* When asked who should enroll in the Air Force ROTC, Sullivan said not every¬ body. "We are another option for students at Fresno Stale. We offer another option, of going into military as military offi¬ cers. Not everybody should be in ROTC, not everybody fits." One of the hurdles that need io be faced in recruiung, according to Sullivan, is to eliminate misconceptions about die Air Force ROTC. He said "many people hate the military. People also have heard bad things about the military from those who were in Vietnam. I would like to clear up misconceptions." LETTERS Continued from page 2 from universities until affirmative action goals are met There is an old saying thai a person will bite their nose to spite their space. Gamboa wants to see more His¬ panics in high positions but at the same time wants to eliminate the funding to ed¬ ucation to get them there. If that's not a paradox, I don't know what is.
