Williams, as actor George Spelvin, stumbles from one play to the next, spurred on by a tyranical stage manager and egotistical actors. He never does grasp what is going on. William's body language makes this play, as he carries himself like a teenager at his first prom, unsure of what's going on and to scared to ask for help. It's a tough play tor the audience as well as the main character, many of the opening-night crowd wore an almost- constandy perplexed look. That expression was shaken only by out¬ bursts of laughter, as the play is weird¬ ly funny. Williams first finds himself caught between Deanna Watkins and Beau¬ regard as two aristocratic ladies in an Oscar Wilde play. He stumbles from that to a scene from Hamlet, with Jonaihon Budd as a stock Shakes¬ pearean Horatio. All the while Lisa Lambright's pushy stage manager goads him on, caring not a bit for his insecurity. Williams' Spelvin is constantly try¬ ing to fit in, with both the actors asd the audience. He scrapes together what tines he can for the parts be is forced into, and then turns to the audience for sympathy and understanding when be isn't making it. It works, as the audience leans forward to listen when Williams talks of Spelvin's failed monastery life and career as an accountant The play works in that the audience, like George Spelvin, really wants to know just what is going on. The play runs through Oct. 8 in the Arena Theater, and some seats are still available. What will the cast do when it's over? Til have to go to con¬ fession, I guess," Watkins said.
