TOMMY Continued from page 6 Baseball was in its first year as a demonstration sport in the 1984 Games. Names like Will Clark, Mark McGwire and Cory Snyder were becoming re¬ cognizable around the globe en route to their gold medals. In 1988, it was names like Jim Ab¬ bott, Ty Griffith and Tommy Goodwin that brought the gold back to the USA. "Honestly, I didn't dream about playing baseball in the Orympics...once," admits the starting centerfiekfcr for Team USA. "But it was a dream come true somehow. It just doesn't make sense." Tom my's track inspirations may explain the best jump in the Olympics, when he piled on his celebrating team¬ mates at the pitcher's mound after the final out was recorded. 1 had to," Goodwin says of the Good¬ win Gold Win leap. "There is a reason behind just about everything. "After we won our regional here at Fresno State, everybody was razzing me because I came up to the pile and didn't do anything. I had a weak jump and I was just patting everybody on the back. "So I said. Well, everybody in the world will see this one, so let's overdo it and get a good one in." Good one by Goodwin - chalk one up for the centerfield of attraction. Speaking of chalk, the Fresno State junior has been excused from eludes for trie rest of the semester by the NCAA itself. Now before you 18.229 other students start complaining, you've got to under¬ stand. You've had your summer vacation. "Exactly, exactly," Goodwin agrees. 'Everybody had theirs, now it's time for mine. Thank you, NCAA. They make the rules, I just abide by them." Besides if the NCAA did not excuse Olympians from fall semester, Goodwin would have a bard time piling cr.io a month-high stack of homework. "That's the great thing about coming back: No school," says Goodwin, who batted 338 tor Team USA over the entire summer. "Yet, I can play and do almost anything I want. There is no way I could get my head in the books right now. If I was going to have to come back and go to school, I probably wouldn't have gone toSeouL TU take this semester off and be ready next semester." Maybe by then, life will go back to / normal for the Goodwins. Ever since the trio of Dad, Mom and Son left Seoul, each Goodwin has been asked the four- word question repeatedly. Where's the gold medal? "Oh, I already gave it to my dad," Goodwin said immediately when he was greeted by reporters as he landed in Fresno last Thursday. "I gave the flowers, to my mom, and the medal to my dad after the game. It was the least I coukfve done after all they've done for me." Spoken like Fresno's favorite son. TU be there (today) celebrating Tom Goodwin Day," says Bulldog Athletic Director Gary Cunningham. "I'm very proud of what he's achieved not only for himself, but for the institution and the community. "I'm also proud of Tom Pagani (FSU women's track and field coach) who ' comes back to Fresno State this week after being an Olympic coach." Team USA, as Ear as Cunningham is cxjiccmoJ, snould change its name to Tom USA in honor of both Pagani and Goodwin. What a year it was for Tom USA. "I know," says Goodwin, recalling the Bulldogs College World Series appearance and his Olympic championship. "I should just stop right now. It'll be great having a day named after me, but that's big time. "I don't know if I'm ready. I don't know if I'm ready for big time yet* You are ready Tom. Anyone who saw you play this year, knows you are ready. So kick back for three months and relax. And well see what we can do about malting Tom Goodwin Day become re- dedicated to "1988: Tommy Goodwin's Year.". You deserve it. COUNTRY Continued from page * Bulldog man with a time of 32:54.
