"I set goals for myself like I'm gonna break this record, I'm gonna have this percentage and that.' Those are good to set just so you know you want to do well I found that it works be iter for me just to say 1 want to play tbe best that I can and leave the statistics and all that stuff on the piece of paper." Estes. a Redwood High graduate from Visalia. lettered three years in sofiball and volleyball and four years in basketball with a number of various recognitions in all three sports. However, she chose volleyball above them all. 1 noticed that the higher level in basketball they get a little bit rougher, rougher ihan I was-willing to get" she said. "I'm not one to be beat up on all the time. Volleyball to me was more organized and a little bit more exciting to me than basketball. Softball wasn't my sport I just did it to keep busy.' Berkeley wasn't her school either as she explained that she wanted to go to a school that offered her a scholarship and Berkeley and Fresno Stale were the two. She explained that she visited Berkeley but found that the people were too different for her. Being a native of Visalia, she found that the people in Fresno and on the. volleyball team resembled the friends she had at borne. Having decided on Fresno Stale she also had to decide on a major. Originally interested in architecture for the design and free-wheeling aspects, she chose civil engineering because Fresno State doesn't offer an architectural program. According to the June 1987 issue of Working Woman, architecture a one of the ten worst careen a woman can take while engineering is one of the top ten. Estes did her first internship in engineering last summer. "This last summer I worked on getting an iniemship so I could get some experience in my maior. "Originally 1 was going to do architecture bat there wasn't any archi tectural programs Bare," she said. "I basically chose to come here before I really decided what my major was. The closest thing was civil engineering and once I looked into that it would be a kx better for me because it had a lot more options and mathematics was one of my stronger subjects in high school. "After the summer when I worked for the City of Visalia in engineering department I found oul that it was exactly what I thought it was going to be. I got to go out into the field and then work in an office, it was back and forth, it want all snick inside all the time. "I may go to summer school so I'm going to took around here in Fresno and hopefully they, have a program here. Viadia's was really good and if I can't find one here I may just dump tbe summer school idea and go back to Visalia." - Estes awl that she has about another year and a semester left in school. When ate graduates she wants to stay in the San Joaquin Valley area. 1 don't care to move down south or up north," said Estes. "Up north would be my first choice above down south. I Like the valley.
