Unataried rdltonaia are the majority opanonof the paper, editorial borard We've all got to do this together Scott Vick I take full responsibility for the failures and successes of the rally Friday. My motives were true and pure, with the intention of making constructive changes here on campus. I believe that students need to be more aware of just how much they can affect change at the university. I followed policy that was set by the senate, and all other procedures were properly followed. We were successful Friday in demonstrating the bitter factionalism of the ASI Senate, something that is very unfortunate. We've got some problems, and I'm embarrassed by them. But now it's time we start dealing with them. What was intended to be a positive, pro- student rally foi students to get information to students on what the ASI is up to, was filibustered by an activist minority of the senate. Our "Student Bill of Rights," the first ASI stance on the collective-rights of students seems now to be tainted by this division. I made a promise that we would take a stand on student rights, we have, and will continue to. The faction, in all fairness, was upset that $300 was spent on publicity for the event, specifically buttons. In well over two-and-a-half weeks not one of the demonstrators expressed an interest in changing the format of the rally or making it more to their satisfaction. By their own choice they did not gel involved. The rally, after all. provided for them a good chance to posture for their respective constituencies. It was a good opportunity. Likewise, in respect to their actions, they seemed more interested in denunciation and yelling than in communication or negotiation. But the shouting and name calling express a frustration that is very real for ihem. At one time a very powerful political force in the senate, culminating with their approval to send money to El Salvador, they have lost much of their ' impact, and are rightfully upset. Still, I agree that $300 is a lot of money. Whether it was well spent or not doesn't seem to matter now as much as what we should do next time. It's time to look ahead to see what we can do to prevent this severe of a student division ever again. <- If there is one lesson 1 can pull from all of this, it's that everyone should be involved in a project from breath number one. If we are to have a productive senate, 10 meet success in our goals, it is now that we have to come together or throw in the towel. I'm not interested in fighting; we have a job to do, let's do it The one message I want to give to students is that we have more influence in our university than we realize. Now those opportunities are just waiting for us to lake advantage of them. It's lime now for differences to be put aside, for enemies to shake hands, dust themselves off, and get busy. We have a big job ahead of us in uniting students, in fighting racism, sexism and division. In the famous words of Abe'Lincoln, "divided we fall." If you have an idea let us know, help us out, come lo the University Student Union and leave a message for me in room 316. We share the opportunities.-' So until the next time, have a nice day. Volleyball team embarrasses itself To the Editor, What is it going to lake, and how long is it going to be before a change in the Fresno State volleyball program is made? Last season I had sympathy for the vol¬ leyball team because I really believed they had talent and team spirit to become PCAA champs. However, in retrospect, I see how wrong I was. I was aghast to read quotes in the Daily Collegian like "low, immature and self-centered" written by teammates about Mary Magyar. Aren't team sports supposed to be played as a team, not as individuals who turn on each other? I definitely admire Magyar. She is not a pigeon who sits on the fence and falls to whatever side suits her fancy at a par¬ ticular moment. Mary sticks to her values and noi only voices what she believes, bui does it I not only wonder about some of the players being pigeons, I also won¬ der about their" 1984 Coach-of-the-Year," Lcilani Overstreet It seems to me that overstreei builds her players up then hits them with the bombshell later. Let me explain with Ovasaea's latest but not only example, Mary Magyar. At the Big West media day, Overstreet quoted Mary as being "one or the outstanding middle blockersJn the country" only to shoot her down about one month later as saying "although"Mag¬ yar was doing some positive work on the floor, the team performed better when she was off the floor." It is had enough ihe dram rams on you but does your coach, who should be set¬ ting an example for her players, do so al¬ so? This incident with Magyar definitely lets the public know that Overstreet has lost control over her girls. When Mike Mitchell quit (he basketball team, Ron Adams (FSU basketball coach) did not let his players get out of control about the is¬ sue cither on the conn or in the press. There is one thing that is consistent about the FSU volleyball program...It's going down fast despite their recent win against Cal Slate Bakersftcld, a Division 2 school (FSU is in Division 1). I am not trying to bury the FSU volleyball team or their so-called coach with em¬ barrassment because they are doing a great job themselves with their inconsisiencies, and verbal malice. The credibility of the Fresno State volleyball program is defin¬ itely in question. Chris Brown .
