j ' " • • ►•'■*■■ ••••■.-..•. P«ge 2 Thursday. October 20.1968 The Dally Collegian -Opinion Bush's skewed American Values Editorial Republican presidential nominee George Bush has been talking emphatically about American values. In fact, Bush seems to think he" that he has a comer on the market when ft comes to the values the American public holds dear and even sacred. He has even gone to the lengths of saying that the Republican Party is the par¬ ty of the American flag, of the average work¬ ing American and the hopes and dreams of the people of this country. Well, let's look at this American icon—this patriotic statue; George Bush's values: Most recently. Bush voiced his opposition of a 60-day notification for workers at large companies and plants of large scale layoffs. Isn't it in the best interest of the average hard-working American to give him or her an opportunity to look for another job and not have to endure the abruptness of being called into the employer's office and being told, "you're fired?" Apparently, Bush chooses to side with big business and their profits instead. American value? Bush has repeatedly made his opposition known to such educational bills as Pell grants and others that would help make it possible for high school graduates to afford a college education. Education—an American value. In what is a slap in the face at minorities, last year Bush supported a Reagan veto of the Civil Rights Restoration Act. This act, for¬ tunately, did eventually pass both houses of Congress—no thanks to Reagan and Bush. Essentially, this act extended the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and made the act more en- forcable. / We were never given a satisfactory ex¬ planation as to the reasoning behind that ill- thought out veto. Equality to all races, creeds and colors—an American value. What Democratic presidential nominee Mich¬ ael Dukakis has not effectively emphasized in his campaign is the duplicity that the Reagan- Bush Administration continues to perpetuate when it comes to drugs. We all know this administration has funded the Nicaraguan rebels for the past eight years. Unfortunately, they have not been funded by persons of the highest moral standards. As was illustrated during the Iran-contra hearings and brought out in further testimony, millions of dollars of drug money had been used to support, both lethal and non-leihal aid to the contras in an attempt to overthrow the Nicaraguan government. What's more, from late 1984 to late 1985," when the supply of arms to the contras was il¬ legal, Bush's own staff was heavily involved in the operation. Bush has said that he knows nothing of the illegal supply of arms to the contras but yet his chief Latin American advisers were in con¬ stant contact with Oliver North to the point that North was quoted as saying that he wanted "Bush's people off his turf," when it came to anning the Nicaraguan rebels. In either case. Bush's stance is intolerable to the American people. ^ Either he did not know about these abuses involving our money, even though his top ad¬ visers, who he supposedly meets with on a regular basis, were immersed in these clan¬ destine operations, or he did know about what was going on. If he was not aware of what his top advisers in Latin America were doing,, what does that say about his management skills and control over his own staff? Is taking-money from from drug profiteers to the contras in order to overthrow a govern¬ ment an American value? Not likely. American values. If we are to have someone, particularly a pre¬ sidential candidate, talk about basic American values, that person should embody those ''values he professes to be of importance to this country. Instead, in a slap of hypocrisy, George Bush has denied his past actions which, indeed, contradict the positive things that this country stands for, and asserts' that he knows what is good and right for this country. Perhaps the American electorate, should scru¬ tinize this candidate and compare his hallow words with his past, concrete actions. Reader Response i to the Daily Collegian 13 welcome. Illogical reasoning To the Editor. 1 am writing in regards to the article "Foreign students homesick" by Hanif Moorad |0cL 18). I would just like to say that Zahcer Ahmced's reasoning for why foreign students choose to stay here in America is truly illogical. He was quoted as saying "you can't do certain things back home, like have girls over..." Now let's think about this for a moment. I think it is highly un¬ likely for a person to change their en¬ tire lifestyle and way of life just so they could have a girl over their house. Logically, it docs not make sense. There arc many factors that can influence a foreign student from not returning to their home country. For example, they may be searching for a better opportunity to find a job or perhaps may fear warfare that is in their country. I just find it hard io believe that a person would change the entire future course of their life just to have a girl over their house. Sincerely, Sami AL-Dossary Canons ignored ^ To the Editor. RegardingDonnellAlexandcr'sopin- ion/editorial/article "Protest reeks hy¬ pocrisy," from Friday, Oct. 14, 1988: The current letter-writing campaign to the Daily Collegian which "absolutely disgusts you," in reference to Barry Grove's opLnion/editorial/article on GLSA and National Coming Out Day, have not been "dominated by open gays" as you have stated. Most of the authors of these letters are unknown and do not hold membership with GLSA. One can openly support the efforts, rights and goals of GLSA without be¬ ing a member and without being gay or lesbian.
