Letter* must be signed and h«ve the author's name, address and phone number Senator takes issue with rally editorial To the Editor. It appears that the Daily Collegian has its head up its rear end again. I thought after the editorial on students claiming their rights, that maybe your staff had finally found a newsworthy goal to pur¬ sue. Alas, it is not to be so. The primary function of the "students can" rally is not designed to improve the image of the ASI, but that will certainly be one of the additional benefits derived from the rally. The rally was actually de¬ signed to deal with the Daily Collegian's "image problem." The more important and relevant func¬ tion of the rally is to inform and mobilize students on campus; to issues that direct¬ ly affect all students now. As students we can change the system, we can change the way the trustees and administrators deal with students. Stu¬ dents must first realize that *^e are not sep- erate and second-class citizens, before we can expect the same from the adminis¬ tration. We truly have power, if we choose to exercise it Just think about this; what would happen if we all refused to send in our tuition payment by mail waiting to pay on the last day of early registration? it would certainly tell the administration about our dissatisfaction with the soon-to- be increased cost of tuition (something over $500.00. and UC Berkeley is a little bit over $700.00) and lack of improve¬ ment academically for this increased fee. It staggers the mind thinking of 18.000- plus students standing outside Joyal Ad¬ ministration at four in the-afternoon wait¬ ing to pay their fees. If we all paid in quarters it would be even better. The school would incur added costs for se¬ curity and for the added person hours u. service the windows. Can you Imagine what this would do to Dr. Haak's goal, a position in the Chancellor's Office? Dr. Haak might get really involved with real student issues instead of promoting his book or going to some ice cream socials. The same concept might be applied to the purchase of the outrageously priced park - ing permits. J ■ The specifics you cite in your editorial opinion are not researched and contain many errors, one of which deals with con¬ dom machines. Thanks to the1 ASI, Dean Corcoran, the student health center, and many others the condom machines will be installed ai no co si to students. The process of getting these installed is a long and complicated one, dealing with com¬ petitive bids, the Davis-Bacon act (pre¬ vailing wage rules), and the logistics in¬ volved with installing 50,60 or even 100 machines on campus. Another good use of the $300 would be to pay the D.C. staff the money. Of Please see LETTERS, page 3 theDaily Cowegian The ttaay Cofleeaon at published by the «.aanmnd Students. Donnell Alexander You've probably never been to an Associated Students, Inc. senate meeting. Upstairs in the Student Union, the ' meetings'are held Tuesday afternoons, with a gallery for the public and everything. This week, however, the meeting came to you. In an effort to beef up student interest, ihe senate held court outdoors, just west of the Free Speech Area. Tbe kids from student government were going to be just like you and me. As if to show what an everyday guy he really is. Senator at large Sean Ford walked over to talk to a reporter before the meeting had begun. Yosemite Sean, the rootin'est, tootin'est ASI .senator, ever to walk on his hindlegs, was angry. Always a well of controversy. Rani was this time angry at Bank Aviles, a leftist senator, who disagrees with whatever the conservative ASI executive council has to say. Aviles had posted a sign next to his chair at tbe senate table reading, "Students Can rally is a waste of money". (Note: "Students Can" is a'slogan the boys upstairs came up with as a theme for today's ASI image-improvement rally. The money is being spent from last semester's publicity budget and Aviles, along with his cohort in dissent Billy J. Lerch, senator from tbe School of Social Sciences, have howled that tbe rally is a waste of student money.) .ASI has spent$300 on 1500 buttons for the event. Scott Vick likes to say he got the buttons idea from the 60s, a decade that is noted hisiorically, if I'm correct, as one of the great PR. time periods. jf Anyway, Ford conies up to live ' reporter, fight? And he looks over at Aviles and says, "Hey, ni give you a great front-page story. Give me a baseball bat and fll bash that fucking sign." What a wacky guy. Now, it should be noted that I covered the senate last for a time last semester and haven't come close to lilting Sean Ford Never. Respect would also be out of the question. ■ s~~^~~ Working on objective news stories (and not opinion columns), I felt that he talked out both sides of his mouth as a rule, spoke out of tus butt when he was really ambitious, engaged in graft and trickery at every turn and was in my opinion just a dirty, hairy character overall. And, well, as far as the Aviles-Lerch connection goes, disagreeing with Scott Vick's every utterance is about the moat significant effort they've ever made, and lhat in itself is pretty dopey. Both of their tenures as senators have been marked by unproductivity, absences and shame. •» So, you see I have no allegiance to anyone mentioned previously and still I tell you this. Why? Three reasons: 1. You should know that all these people alledgedly represent you and roe in how student body fees (the college student equivalent of taxes) are spent 2. I'm bring ing this up also because of today's "image improvement" deal. It must be a big deal—Scott Vick just spent in ihc ndghborhood of $300 on burtons. Vick's said assertion is that "S tuderus Can" make a difference in the quality of lite at CSUF." I believe him. 3. Aviles and Lerch actually made sense once or twice Tuesday. On one occasion they argued with the Executive Council for allegedly pushing commji nee cxiafirmations past senators on short notice. Dan Aucma, a rookie senator from the School of Engineering not normally affiliated with Avilerch. attempted to express agreement with the ^ ■ two, but was beaten down like a small child by a senate that hates anything Senate lefties like. Things aren't supposed to work this way. There is an atrnospbere of extreme iniolerence in the senate and no one person is at fault. Avilerch rejects everything Vick says, Sean Ford looks as though he may arm himself and the remainder of the senate has proven itself mealy-mouthed Things are out of hand And Mark Astone ain't even here no more. > • ;- During a tirade against "some senators," Yosemite Sean threatened to fight showboating with showboating. He said he would "get civil disobedient (sic), even if I have to turn over tables to do "Students Can", but those who are capable aren't serving on the senate right now. If they are currently serving, they're hiding their talents really well. Dissatisfaction amid the student body has manifested itself in the forms of "Bomb the AS senate" grafiai" and fliers deriding Vick and others in the senate. Expression such as these is cowardly and improve nothing to anyone. So you wanna make a difference? Then go to the rally. Pick up a propaganda kit, pot your button on (wear it upside down; it really doesn't matter) and tell them how you think student government should be run. - Take a cue from the 60s. Go team.
