Dean Slagel/ Daily/Collegiar- Soccer 'Dogs edge Stanford 1-0 .. •»* . BY DAVID COMFORT Sports Writer If the Stanford University soccer team didn't hate the Big West'confercnce after last weekend, it sure does now. After seeing its hopes for a national ranking disappear with overtime losses to Cal State Fullerton and UC-Santa Barbara over the weekend, the Cardinal's hopes for revenge in Fresno were thwarted Wednesday by Fresno State University, which won a 1-0 nonleague decision ai Bulldog Stadium. Stanford, which started its season with six consecutive wins, has now lost three straight, all io ihe Big West To the Cardinal, the Big Bad West. And while a loss is seldom pretty, this one must have rankled the Stanford coaches in die extreme. Sloppy ball handling by the Cardinal led to numerous chances for the Bulldogs late in the game. Forward Karl lngeman scorea ihc gamewinner with 2:04 left in the contest for the Bulldogs, 4-2-1 on ihe season. lngeman look a pass in the goalie's box from Tim Martin, who had intercepted a lazy pass in Stanford's end, and chipped the ball past goalkeeper Chris Helling from 10 yards. lngeman was cutting hack and forth in . front of the goal when Martin dropped the delicate 40-yard pass in front of him. \ "We made eye contact, I went toward \ the goal and he jusi put the ball right on ( me. I heard the goalie coming, turned and kicked it by him," lngeman said. The goal was Ingeman's second for ihe season. The score capped a furious final seven minutes of the game in which Fresno State manufactured several scoring chances. The hard-charging Bulldogs boiilcd ihe Cardinal in its end of ihe field while giving Helling a workout "They came back in ihe last 15 minutes and played their hearts out" Fresno Slate head coach Jose Elgorriaga said. "They just pressured and pressured and saw the goal and put it. in. I was most happy with < ihc fact that ihey fought and fought." Ingeman's goal came on ihe fourth solid shot of the final seven minutes. Two chances came on breakaway drives by Robbie Danner, one a shot by Danner that hit the right upright of the goal. On Danner's second drive, he placed a pinpoint pass in front of Martin in the goalie's box, but Martin's shot dribbled wide right The Bulldogs' other opportunity came when Martin's header from five yards away bounced off the crossbar right back to Martin, whose second header lofted over the goal. This offensive surge was not characteristic of the entire game, however. Elgorriaga had shuffled his lineup in hopes of attaining offensive consistency, which has been a problem for Fresno State at crucial times. Elgorriaga had midfielder Martin at forward and fullbacks Sean O'Gara and Paul McCully at midfield. Erie Wilson started at fullback. "I was trying to find combinations so we won't have those tips and downs on ihe field," ihe coach said. "When we get down we're very vulnerable to ihe counterattack." — The coach need not have worried about counterattacking in this game. Defensive consistency was nol a problem as the Bulldogs refused to be shaken by the Cardinal's rough-and-tumble style. Stanford committed 21 fouls to Fresno Slate's 15 and was issued two yellow cards. "When ihey started hacking we just knocked the ball to the open space so they couldn't gei to our ankles," lngeman said. Fullback Paul Tell said, "We just had them marked man-to-man, and Wilson and [Geoff] Gray didn'i let ihem turn in with the ball at all. Lasi year they beat us 1-0 so il really fired us up to get back at them." Goalkeeper Mark Dougherty, who rccoruCu his 21st c.ixi snutout, also got into the defensive act with a diving stop of a Tim Keyes blast wilh 10 minuies left in the game.
