September 2,1988 The DaQy CcOegkm FSU to display talent in tournament BY JENNIFER KONZE Spora Writer The 1988 Fresno State women's volleyball season starts tonight with the Lady Bulldogs hosting preconference ac¬ tion in the Dan Gamel Invitational. Included in the tournament are Min¬ nesota, ranked No. 24 by Volleyball Monthly, who lace unranked Santa Clara in the first round opening match at 5:30 p.m. in the Fresno State North Gym followed by Fresno Stale battling un- ranked Nevada-Reno at 8 pjn. i ne Minnesota Golden Gophers make their first appearance at the Inivitaiional, formerly called the Bulldog Classic, and enter as one of tbe strongest teams with 11 of 14 players returning and losing on¬ ly one starter from last year's squad. The Golden Gophers are led by first team All-Big Ten selection, outside hitter Andrea Gonzalez. Gonzalez, 5-feet-ll, is the only senior on the team In team meetings, Fresno State leads 1-0. Invitational returnees the Santa Clara Broncos enter with all their starters re¬ turning. Fresno State leads the all-time series with Santa Clara 18-3. Also making another trip to the Invitational, the Nevada-Reno Wolf Pack enter the tournament with no ctuming starters from last year's squad. The only senior on the squad, and top Wolf Pack returnee, is outside hitter Pam Burnley, 5-7, who recorded 65 kills and 116 digs in 60 of 112 games during last year's 30 match season for Reno-Nevada. "They are a very scrappy team," said Leilani Overstreet, Fresno State head volleyball coach, in reference to Nevada- Reno. "I don't know what they will be like in terms of their aggressive attacking at this point But, I know that they never let the ball hit the floor on their tide of the court. They.are just a rewy scrappy team." Fresno State has won six out of eight matches against the Wolf Pack including each of the last two meetings. Winners of first round competition advance to the championship match to¬ morrow at 8 p.m. following a con¬ solation match between the losers at 5:30 pjn. NEED CASH?
