But what about "Big Mac"? , . Remember him? He was the one who tied a school record last March with hits in eight consecutive at- bats, earning him honors as Na¬ tional Player of the Week. Just to reiterate that his bat is not to be overlooked, McNamara stole the show at Saturday's annual Alumni game with a towering, 405- foot grand slam to dead-center field, part of a six-run seventh, in¬ ning which helped carry the Bull- Gary McNamara , • dog varsity from a four-run deficit to a 10-7 win over the FSU alumni before 2,127 well-bundled Red Wavers at Beiden Field. McNamara, a senior from San Carlos, was the only Bulldog to hit a grand^slam in 1992. Saturday, he went 2 for 5 with a home run. double, two runs scored and four RBI. "The count was two-and-oh so I figured he was going to throw me a fastball," McNamara said. "I just tried to swing as hard as I could and, apparently, I got all ball." Apparently so. The Bulldogs won a game, defeating the Aztecs 72-67 at SDSU's Peterson Gymnasium. FSU, 3-6 in the WAC and 8-10 overall, snapped a six-game losing streak and sent SDSU reeling to its eighth loss in nine conference games this season. It was the Az¬ tecs' 25th loss in the last 26 WAC games. SDSU had defeated Air Force on Thursday night to snap a 24-game conference losing streak. In a Thursday-night encounter on the Hawaiian islands, the Bull¬ dogs had a chance to seize victory in the waning moments against Hawaii, but were defeated by the Rainbows, 78-74. Leading scorer Seth Marshall and walk-on Patrick Teagues did not accompany the team on me road trip because of two-game sus¬ pensions they received following the Bulldogs' home loss to Air Force. Marcus Banks led SDSU with 22 points and Court ie Miller added 14 in a losing cause. SDSU was out rebounded 37-31. Travis Stel, Lee MaybeiTy and Davon Satterwhite carried the 'Dogs. Stel scored 18 points in each game and Mayberry pulled down a season-high 14 boards and scored seven points against the Aztecs. He had nine rebounds in Hawaii. Satterwhite scored a ca¬ reer-high 20 points and hit six three- pointers against SDSU. Fresno State led SDSU 51-41 with 12:47 remaining, but a 15-4 run by the Aztecs gave them a 56- 55 lead with 5:56 left. With the score tied at 59 with 4:30 left, the 'Dogs went on a 9-0 run to seize control of the game. FSU coach Gary Colson and the rest of the Bulldogs were pleased with the team's play, and feel tbey can finish the season on a positive note if they continue to play to¬ gether. Colson had threatened to make drastic changes such as re¬ voking scholarships If the Bull- fJogs' skid continued. The Bulldogs host the same two teams this weekend. By Dm Donnelly Staff Writer Playing at home for the first time in two weeks, the FSU women's basketball team split a pair of Western Athletic Conference games. Thursday night at the North Gym, the Bulldogs easily defeated Wyoming, 99-70. fueled by a career-high 24 points from Staci Oddo. Point guard Tammie Beckley also tied a school record for assists, with 12. She shares the record with Wendy Martell, who had 12 in 1987 against UC Santa Barbara. Colorado State came calling. Saturday night and outscored FSU by nine in the second half to win 71-65, giving the Rams their first WAC win of the season. . 1 he two-game homestand was a Dr. Jeky Ii and Mr. Hyde routine for the Bulldogs, 1-4 in the WAC and 6-10 overall. Against the Cowgirls, 1-3 in the WAC and 9-7 overall, the Bulldogs looked tremendous. Tammie Beckley and Oddo started together for the first time this season and led trie fast break to perfection. The Bulldogs used several big runs to build a47-B9 halftime lead. With 15:14 left • - Beckley fin the firs: half and FSU L leading 12-11. the Bull- I dogs went on a 9-0 run to * lead 21-11. Another 12-0 run gave the 'Dogs a 41- »j 23 lead they would never jj| relinquish. Oddo led all scorers with IS points in the first half, hitting all six of her shots. The Bull¬ dogs came out strong in the second half, never letting the cowgirls closer than 17 points. Although Wyoming shot 53 percent, it wasn't good enough. Scarlett Gustin led the Cowgirls with 23 points and seven boards. No other Cowgirl scored in double figures. FSU shot a sizzling 62 percent, mostly on fast-break layups, and had six .players in double figures led by Oddo and Sue Will. Oddo hit eight of nine shots and seven of eight free throws in establishing a new ca¬ reer high. "It felt good, not because I scored 24 points, but because we won the game," Oddo said. "I enjoy playing with Tammie. She's a good point guard and she -knows when to get me the ball." Will scored 15 points. Forward Jolayne Thompson added 12 "while three players including Beckley had 11.
