7-Sports Daily Collegian September 1,1992 New assistant volleyball coach energenic By D avid Donnelly Sports Editor t When talking to new assistant '^N>vomen's volleyball coach Carl Ferreira, one gets the impression of a very friendly individual. But, that makes sense. Ferreira is from Hilo, Hawaii. "Hilo has a very friendly atmosphere," Ferreira said. Ferreira is a student at FSU and is working on his teaching credential. He hopes to teach ..- physical education, biolqgy or any of the physical sciences at the collegiate level. He decided on a teaching career after trying several other careers. "I sold insurance for two and a half years and was a construction worker traveling all over northern California building Jack in the Boxes," Ferreira said. "I was unhappy and I was doing things I didn't want to do. I decided I have a knack for teaching." Head coach Lindy Vivas ^said ■ the posiuon Ferreira was hired for has to do with recruiting. "Carl brings a great enthusiasm for the sport and a great sense of humor," Vivas said. "He has real good communication skills and that is a criteria for his position. Coaches have to be able--tc> communicate." But another requirement of the sport often overlooked is the mental aspect. Fresno State midfielder Jason Gray knows that all too well, but the mental part of the game is perhaps what he is most suited for. Gray, a senior majoring in exercise physiology, has completed jhelast three semesters with a 4.0 GPA and graduated from high school with a4.04 GPA. "[The4.0GPA] surprises me. I just try to work as hard off the field as I do on the field. My work ethic is strong," Gray said. That work ethic has propelled Gray through his Bulldog career, making him one of the players to watch this season. Last year saw Gray start every game for FSU, only one of two Bulldogs to do so. He also finished upbeat. He's very creative.*' Ferreira sees himself much die same way. *T would probably consider myself a very energetic, creative, 'don't like to be second best' kind of guy," Ferreira said. "I'm one of those guys that will work hard and I like_ to let my actions speak for themselves. I mink I communicate real well with , players and the parent! and that's one of the main reasons I'm successful.** , Ferreira, 31, moved to Santa Rosa, California in 1979 after graduating from jSt Joseph High School in Hilo. Last year Ferreira moved to Fresno after his fiancee got a job coaching the women's volleyball team and teaching at -a Carl Ferreira, % Clovis High School. Ferreira spent the 1991-1992 school year as the assistant women's volleyball coach at Clovis. In 1991, Ferreira served as the head coach at Saratoga High School in Santa Rosa. Ferreira also runs volleyball clubs for girls. Last spring he founded the T.E.A.M. Central Valley Volleyball Club. Ferreira -also was the-head coach of the; l. Griffin Volleyball Club for 18- y car-olds. "There is a need to become good volleyball players and that is ^ what I'd like to develop," Ferreira said.
