La Voz Sorority $eeks change arid not selling out culture Simply defined: Poor people are screwed from behind again' Teresa Navarro Editor We all had to take a class in ECO¬ NOMICS this year. Another capitalistic ! word for POLITICS, Simply defined; Poor people are screwedifrom behind again, j First, the Student Tax they so casually called a Tutition Fee Raise was thrust upon .us. While the administration crawled on • ifs ass so we wouldn't know their shit stinks!! Well, the smell was definitely no¬ ticeable Especially when some adminis¬ trators blantantly insisted that students should pay more to "maintain quality edu¬ cation" (a.k.a.sothey could keep their jobs). Students could also maintain quality edu¬ cation by demanding that these adminis¬ trators have M-A.'s, Ph.D.'s, and other QUALITY Degrees, of which, some admin¬ istrators are desperately lacking- Of course, the most recent and contro¬ versial Economic disaster is the Rodney King beating. We saw this Capitalistic system for what it is, what it has been, and with ,a \FIGHT —„what it will never be again! We can't let this go as easily as we did the tutition fee increase. Did you hear me!7 WE CANT LET THIS GO! Lately,in the media there has been alot of focus on theaftermath of the King verdict. Although i t is an important issue to discuss, it is not the main issue The main issue is King's unjust, outrageous, and sickening verdict. Everybody knows that this type of brutal¬ ity has been happening for a long time , People of color are continually being har- rassed by the judicial system. A system that is outdated. Their abusive behavior. has become so overt that they had the au¬ dacity to stand in front of the American people and mock our faith in this justice system. There is No Justice for People of Color in AmeriKKKa. It is a game and we are the pu vstn, carelessly discarded. This is only the beginninnr o the end of the equal rights that our brothers and sisters in the past struggled and fought to attain for us and our children. It is our re¬ sponsibility aseducated people to organize ourselves and utilize trie power welet slum-, ber while the monster devours Our Free¬ dom! . •i'L- —•---- •.hJihhhi^irirc': DearEditor: I am writing this letter in response to a short article that was written in the MEChA Newsletter (VoL I Na ID) by Christina Salcedo. Before I begin, I would like to make it clear that what I am about to express is my own personal feelings. I am speaking as an individual and I am not representing Lamda Sigma Gamma Sorority. First of all, let me begin by letting you know that I was very offended by Christina Salcedo's article. Even though she did not directly state the sisters of Lamda Sigma Gamma were the Chicanas who "turned their backs on their cul¬ ture," I felt as if that is what she was insinuating. If this is what she believes, then I hortestiy think she needs to take the time to gain more information about our organization before she begins writing such offensive articles. I strongly feel that it is unfair for her to judge others before completely gathering all the facts necessary to write an article Lamda Sigma Gamma was estab¬ lished to eliminate segregation. Our or¬ ganization is not a "Chicana Sorority" but this definitely does not mean the members of our organization are not proud of their ancestral contributions. Our organization is a diverse sorority in which we welcome any member of any race We do not want to limit ourselves to improving the well being of only one community. Does she really believe that since an organization has different purposes of existence that those members have turned their backs on their culture? She states,."what Chicanos must understand is by taking on Greek letters, they are accepting a system that has oppressed people of color for centuries." Well, if she is so, knowledgeable on the history of oppressed people, I would like her lb answer this for me; Were people qf c^lor always accepted into universities? Were we not oppressed in that we were unable to attend college? Well, if her viewpoint is correct, then tell me why she is \ attending a university. By attending a uni¬ versity isn't she accepting a system that has oppressed people of color in the past!!!? Isn't she glad her ancestors fought to make a change in the system? I AM!! Can't she see what we're trying to do is make a change!!? We're not turning our backs on our culture!! Another question I have is that of Lamda Theta Nu. I have nothing against this organization, as a matter of ted, I am very proud of this sdVority to take a stand in what they believe in. Lamda Theta Nu is a "Latina Sorority" that is dedicated to improving the well being of La Raza community, and that is wonderful!! My question is to Christina. Aslstated before, she wrote in her article that "if Chicanos take on Greek letters, they are accepting a system that has oppressed people of color." Isn't the "Lamda Theta Nu" Greek letters or is this my imagina¬ tion? It seems as if she praises this soror¬ ity, but then turns around and states, to wear Greek letters is offensive Doesn't this seem as if she is contradicting her¬ self? I am very proud to be a Mexican- American women involved in an organi¬ zation that is striving for positive purposes of existence Although, I have to say that I am very ashamed that there are students on my campus who do not take the time to learn about different organisations. I believe everything Lamda Sigma Gamma tries to accomplish is based on good intentions and I am of¬ fended by articles such as hers, that do not appreciate the beneficial events that occur within out sorority. I do not have a doubt in my mind that my sororitvsisters also acknowledge that we have a rich . culture and a proud history. I will never forget how past generations have struggled to keep their identity alive, but also have struggled for MAKING A CHANGE while others have tried so hard to avoid this reality.
