For the first time, U.S. news and World Report has ranked graduate programs in disci¬ plines such as history, political science, economics, English, psychology and sociology this year. In its ranking released last week, Yale University ranked as the number one law school in America for the third straight year. Harvard and Stanford are ranked second and third, respec¬ tively. The following schools re¬ ceived the top ranking in each of the following six liberal arts" disciplines: history, UC Berkeley; political science, UC Berkeley; economics, Stanford; English, UC Berkeley; psychol¬ ogy, Stanford; and sociology, University of Wisconsin. Stanford Uni versi ty recei ved top honors for its graduate busi¬ ness school. \ . _ The 'top research-oriented . medical school^s Harvard, and for the third straight year, Mas¬ sachusetts Institute of Technol¬ ogy was chosen as the top-rank¬ ing engineering school in Amer¬ ica. The criteria for the ranking of the schools are scholarly pro¬ duction, the quality of the cur¬ riculum and the reputation of its faculty and students. U.S. News and World Re¬ port surveyed only schools that had granted five or more doc¬ toral degrees in any one of the disciplines between 1986 and 1990. The magazine contacted and surveyed departmen t heads and directors of graduate studies at each of the schools. Stanford, Harvard and UC Berkeley finished well in most categories. In each of the six new disci¬ plines tote ranked, UC Berkeley placed in the top five schools. In five of the six new areas, the liberal arts, categories Stan¬ ford placed in the top five schools, and Harvard appeared in the top five in three of the disciplines. However, UC Berkeley did not fare as well as its counter¬ parts Harvard and Stanford in business and law. While Stanford and Harvard finished first and second in the business school rankings, and second and third in the law school rankings, UC Berkeley placed 13th in business and 12th inlaw. The rankings were published in the March 23,1992 issue of U.S News and World Report The issue also outlined the-*- nations best graduate schools. The magazine also ranked executive-education programs for the first time. Harvard received top hon¬ ors in mis category. Student selectivity, place¬ ment success, and graduation rates were the criteria for distin¬ guishing between the top 25 schools in this area. U.S. News and World Re¬ port also surveyed a reputa- tional survey of up-and-com¬ ing graduate schhols in engi¬ neering. University of Santa Barbara placed first in this survey of fu¬ ture ebgineering school heavy¬ weights. Promising innovations in the curriculum at the schools was an important factor in the selection of up-and-coming en¬ gineering schools. Arizona State University and University of California at Irv¬ ine rounded out the top three schools. The overall top medical school is Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Criteria for determining ranking in the top comprehen¬ sive medical schools consisted of two surveys of academic reputation. One was admini¬ stered to the top medical deans of the schools, and the second was given to intern-residency directors. Kennel Bookstore!
