Folk singers fail to excite, hindered by flat singing lasonterada ArtSpSlak editor Folk singing group Shanachie performed at a University Student Union-sponsored concert Thursday night in the Satellite Student Union before some 75 students, faculty and folk music enthusiasts. The Cupertino-based group, whose name translates as "Storyteller" in Gaelic, consists of banjo player Jim Rivera, bassist Joe Francisco, Ritchie Power on rhythm guitar and Jack Healey pfaying mandolin and lead guitar. Rivera, clad in a blue plaid shirt and jeans, emphasized the close relationship between the music of the British Isles and American bluegrass and country western styles throughout the performance, which consisted 7ft&Daily Collegian— the only office on campus that is open from 12-1. Shanachie also performed regional Irish jigs in the spirit of St. Patrick'frDay. Listeners were encouraged to clap to the music or sing along with the band to help create a pub-like atmos¬ phere. However, the sedate crowd, consisting mainly of members from a local folk music group, was sometimes hard to moti¬ vate: at one point Rivera declared to the'audience, "We're not a TV set." Shanachie's performance was also hindered by some flat singing by Francisco. Shanachie had recently completed a 28 day tour of Germany and recounted their experiences in the reunified nation with good humor and an admiration of Teutonic culture. Following the first half of the show, which included a rendi¬ tion of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," band members and support staff sold record¬ ings and sweatshirts with the Shanachie logo silkscreened in six colors. Shanachie had been in Fresno as part of a tour of the Western States, and were en route to Reno for a television appear¬ ance.
