..^jpovts. 7&i?!&^ Abas, Neat earn All-America honors Sports reports The end of a long wrestling season reached its peak over the weekend for two Fresno State wrestlers. Gerry Abas and Lorenzo Neal achieved All-America status Saturday in the NCAA wrestling championships in Oklahoma City. A freshman at 142 pounds, Abas lost both his matches Saturday but finished sixth based on strong performances Thursday and Friday. He could ha ve finished third had he won both his Saturday bouts. Neal, a junior heavyweight from Lemoore and a fullback on the football team, beat Oklahoma State's Kirk Mam- men 2-1 to finish seventh. Neal finished the season with a record of 24-5-3. To gain All-America honors the wrestler must finish in the top eight of his weight class. Abas lost Saturday 7-2 to Missouri's Kenny Liddell and 12-3 to Indiana's Jeff Lyons. Abas, with a season record of 41-7, reached No. 8 on the FSU all-time single-season victory list. The Bulldogs, which sent four wrestlers to the tourna¬ ment, tied Michigan for 25th place in the team standings with 12 points. The 25th place finish marked the sixth time mat FSU has finished in the top 25. The Bulldogs were 25th in 1987, 21st in 1984 and 10th three years in a row: 1966-68. The last Bulldog grapplers to gain All-America status were WadeZimmerman, sixth at 158 pounds, and Dan Neibuhr, seventh at 167 pounds, both in 1989. The Iowa Hawkeyes rolled to their second straight team title and 13th in school history. The Hawkeyes were led by three wrestlers winning cham¬ pionships, including three- time winner Tom Brands. Brands won at 134 pounds and was' named the tournament's outstanding wrestler. His twin brother, Terry, became a two-time champion atl26poundsandTroySteiner won for the first time at 142 pourds. Iowa also had a runner-up 118-pound class with Zaputil. ima State's Pat Smith tinued his dominance at 158 pounds, winning his third straight tide. He can become the first four- time winner next year. Jeff Prescott of Perm State at 118 pounds and Matt Demaray of Wisconsin at 150 pounds repeated as champions. Heavyweight Kurt Angle of Clarion won for the second time in three years. Oklahoma State had 1001/2 points, with only one cham¬ pion among their five finalists, and Penn State was third with 891/2 points.
