' J ' " ' 'i.i Sr*>rts Writer For a half, it looked as though the Fresno State womens basketball team was on its way to an upset over the 12th-ranked Hawaii Rain¬ bow Wahines Sunday afternoon, but Hawaii center Alicia Pontious scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Hawaii to a 78-f>0 victory over Fresno State. "Alicia played real well, and she's finishing the season real strong," said Hawaii head coach Vince Goo, "our other girls knew she was hot and had the touch tonight, and they went to her." Hawaii(19-5 overall, 11-5 Big West Conference) playing the Bull¬ dogs for the second time in three days, dropped the Bulldogs 87-68 Friday night, and then followed it up Sunday afternoon with the win which spoiled Senior Night at the North Gym. Playing its sixth game in ten days, Hawaii showed no ill effects from' the activity, outrunning the Bull¬ dogs to drop Fresno State to 12-13 overall and 6-10 in the Big West. Hawaii, which has no starter av¬ erage over 10 points a game, uses a intrestmg game plan which sees all five players substituted for after six or seven minutes. The "two-team" set-up helped the Rainbow Wahines late in the game when the Bulldog players were getting winded from the constant up-and-down tempo of the game. " Hawaii has some extremely good athletes and a very good bench, and that the way its been all year," Fresno State coach Bob Spencer said. They play together very well and can make (all) the adjust¬ ments." Sunday's game was the final home game for seniors Stacey Cornaggia, Adella Head, and Dana Steward. The Bulldogs trailed early 8-4, but went on a 12-6 run to go up 20- 14 with 10:36 left in'the first half. Hawaii pulled to 22-21 before a media timeout at 7:36, but from there outscored the Bulldogs 1S-10 to take a 36-32 lead into the half. FSU hung close, tying the score at 49-49 with 11:44 to go in t)ie game, but a 16-6 run keyed by Pontious' 10 points put Hawaii up by 12,65- 53, and from there they cruised. Hawaii was helped by the fact that FSU scored just 11 points in the last 11 minutes, and that the Bull¬ dogs missed the front-end of four straight one-and^one free throws late in the game. Cornaggia picked up her third foul just 10 minutes into the game, and fouled out with 5:57 left in the game, and ended the night with just eight points. Head picked up 20 points and sevenrerx)unds,andTammieBeck- * ley, playing all 40 minutes, added 15, nine of which came on free throws, to lead the T>ogs. Hawaii also got 10 points each from both Melanie Azama and Kalei Namohala in addition to Pontiou&22. FSU takes two from BYU in weekend home series Sports Staff Fresno State's baseball team got a much-needed win Saturday against the Brigham Young Cougars thanks in part to clutch performances by Wade Maxwell and Anthony Boni- fazio. FSU beat BYU 4-3 before a crowd of 2,062 at Beiden Field. Maxwell, facing Cougars reliever Ryan Hancock, singled to lead off the ninth. Bryan Judice then sac¬ ra ficed pinch runner Jim Patterson to second base. That set things up for Bonifazio, who took a fastball the opposite way for a double just inside the right-held line Patterson ran home with the win¬ ning run, putting a period to the third 4-3 game of the series. FSU (10-7) won two of them, but blew a 3-1 lead going into the eighth for , their lone loss of the series. BYU (8-6) tied the game at three runs a piece in the ninth on a two- out double by Michael Espiritu off Bulldog reliever Raul Gonzales. Mark Cruise (1-0) relieved Gonzales and got pinch hitter Chris Hermansen to fly out to left field. Notes- FSU's Todd Johnson got his 200th hit of his career Saturday against the Cougars. The junior catcher leads the team in RBI with 15thisyear,andhe'sued for fifth in school history with 124... Sopho¬ more Wade Maxwell did a good job filling in for Todd Johnson at catcher. Johnson was used at the designated hitter position to rest his arm. Maxwell sacrificed to set up a Bulldogs run in the seventh, and singled to energize the team's winning run in the ninth.
