"But the whole thing got out of control.,, The audience ripped the doll to pieces and threw the toilet paper to the ceiling where it hung dangerously close to the stage lights. Barsoom said he was then told to "cut their set short." The Neanderthals' per¬ formance ended ten min¬ utes short of their sched¬ uled time. 1— i Read the Daily Collegian But theenergeticcrowd didn't disappoint Bar¬ soom at all.- "I was really im¬ pressed," he said. T didn't expect as big of a crowd." Attendance at Friday's concert was more than 700. The Neanderthals (gui¬ tarist Ben Medrano, dnimmer Donny Marvin, bassist Andy Witchez, and vocalistPhill Rhoads) will now be judged against other bands from the western region. Four bands from this group of winners will be selected to compete in re¬ gional competition at UC Riverside on Feb. 19. The winner of the re¬ gional competition will be featured on the "MTV Spring Break Bash Con¬ cert" at Daytona Beach, Fla., in March. The winning band also receives a private record¬ ing session at a profes¬ sional studio and $2,000 cash. Friday night's concert seemed to leave local fans hungry for more. "This is something they should do every year," said Lisa Wylie, a CSUF senior majoring in Eng¬ lish. 'The crowd response was pretty wild. They got real excited over the Neanderthals and Black Fry. Both got the crowd pumped up." Pumped up, indeed. "Let the violence go on," said 16-year-old Danny Becerril, his hair dripping with sweat from moshing in the "pit." "Look at all my little scars," said 14-year-old Noah Russell, proudly showing the red scratches across his arms and bare chest. 'It was a great, great crowd," said Jay Fung, bassist for The Miss Alans. "We had fun." The younger fans, those not old enough to get into the local clubs, seemed to appreciate the rare oppurrunity to hear some of Fresno's best bands. "They're cool," said 15- year-old Eric Atherton.
