The T>ogs avenged the New Mexico loss by beating the Lobos, won at Utah with surprising ease, and entered the Oct 6 game at Northern Illinois 5-0 and ranked 24th. Before the season, I circled Oct 6 on my calender thinking to myself, If we lose a game it will thai one.' The Huskies limped out of the Huskie Stadium runnel 2-3 coming off a loss at hapless Northwestern. But 733 yards of Stacey Robinson and the Huskie wishbone offense produced a 73-18 NIU win and a hu¬ miliating item in Sports Illustrated, which con¬ cluded Fresno was Fres-noi . The team was never the same again and it handed the Big West crown to San Jose Shite. 1991— The Dogs again started fast, hammering Northern Illinois, coming from behind to win back- to-back road games against Pacific 10 teams, and scored 94 against our friends from New Mexico. But a 42-28 win at New Mexico State was tarnished by the loss of quarterback Mark Barsotti, forcing red shirt freshman Trent Dilfer to satisfy hungry Bulldog fans. A 48- 22winoverUNLV quenched many Red Wavers' appetites. 7-0 and ranked 25th entering last Saturday's game at Utah State, FSU appeared to be finally headed for the elusive dream of an unbeaten season. The dream died in Logan however, as we all know by now. What do these three losses have in common? Fresno State entered the game unbeaten, ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, and favored pver teams that were simply not as good. Fresno State left Albuquerque, DeKalb and Logan with lost rankings and lost dreams. Why can't Fresno State win these road games? God, I can't wait until we join the WACI would rather lose 59-0 to BYU than 20-19 to Utah State. But 111 be at Bulldog Stadium Nov. 16 against Cal State FuUerton, cheermgfof niy school until I'm hoarse. Until Dr. Welty gives mea diploma, I will not miss a Fresno State home football game. Mr. Gocolesisafunior, majoringin journalism. Anderson: Qualifies g spikers: Lose to UOP for National Tourney Continued from page 6 The championship automati¬ cally qualifies Anderson for the Rolex ITCA National Champion¬ ships. Previous winners of the ITCA NorCal Tournament include Tim Mayotte, John McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe and Jeff Turango. 1 looked up at the list of win¬ ners and I saw all of these names up there," he said. "Now I get to see my name up there and it feels good to be on that list. "I had no idea that I could win this thing. I knew I was playing well, but I didn't know how well." Anderson is not the only Bull¬ dog to have played strong in the NorCal. Nils Koitka and Oaf Sa- chau won five matches before being defeated, 4-6,6-4,6-4 by the Stanford team of Chris Cocotos and Vimal Patel in the semifinals. Likewise, the Bulldogs' team of Steve Jackson and Mike Noel were eliminated in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-4, by the tournament—champi¬ onship team of Robert Devins and Michael Flanagan of Stanford. _ V Koitka, the tournament's 13th*. seeded individual player, lost Ws quarterfinal round match to Crile, 6-3,6-4. "I don't want to take anything away from Greg, but it was a tre¬ mendous tournament for the whole team," Smith said. "It was a great team effort and Greg capped it off by winning the champion¬ ship." The fact that he is the first player from a school other than Cal or Stanford to win the tournament in 19 years is especially important to Anderson. "In the past I've been intimi¬ dated when I play someone from Stanford or Berkeley," he admit¬ ted. "I think(Smith)isagreat coach and he has helped me overcome that. "I remember I was playing a guy from Stanford and I was up 6- 0, 2-0 and he won a game. Peter came out on the court chewing on an apple and told me to relax After that, I put the guy away."
