'Dogs always have trouble with Aggies By Richard James DC Sports writer 8-8-1 series record against Utah When the Fresno State football team travels to Logan, Utah Satur¬ day for a Big West Conference matchup with the Utah State Ag¬ gies, they will be racing a team close to a transition phase. Utah State head coach Chuck Sheltonconfirmed earlier this week he will resign at the end of this season, a decision he said he made in December. "I felt (the president of UtahState Dr. StaWordCazier) that! they were not prepared to do the things needed for continuity in the pro¬ gram," Shelton said. "I felt it was time to leave. It doesn't matter if we were 8-1 or 1- 8." The game will be a tough one for the Bulldogs, as they have always had problems with the Aggies (1-6 overall, 1 -2 in c onference). This is evident in the83-l series record. Utah State has won six of eight games in Logan against FSU. The Bulldogs will, face a good offensive unit, led by quarterback Ron Lopez. He has completed 49 percent of his passes (113 of 229) for 1,649 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lopez has also thrown nine in¬ terceptions. Although having an off year, running back Roger Grant is lead¬ ing the Aggies in rushing. "Roger's had some injuries, in¬ cluding a knee injury he's playing with and a broken hand. We've also had a couple key injuries in the offensive line," Shelton said in ref¬ erence to Grant's off-season. Grant has rushed for 482 yards on 114 attempts and one touch¬ down for an average of 4.3 yards per carry. Grant is the Aggie running game, as fullbacks Floyd Foreman and Chad Tigert have been ineffective, averaging 12 and 23 yards per carry, respectively. v^The Utah State receiving corps are a concern to FSU head coach Jim Sweeney. "Tzacey Jenkins is a great receiver and we have to live with the mis¬ take of not recruiting him," Sweeney said. Jenkins is second on the team in receiving with 504 yards on 42 receptions and three touchdowns. Rod Moore leads the team with 44 receptions for 725 yards and seven touchdowns for an average of 16.5 yards per reception. Watch to'Dogs play the Ag¬ gies at 11:00 a.m. on Chan¬ nel 26 Defensively the Aggies are led by inside linebacker Del L y les. He leads the team with 91 tack¬ les, 35 of those unassisted. Lyles also has three sacks. The Bulldogs are coming off a strong showing against the Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas. Redshirt freshman Trent Dilfer made his collegiate starting debut in that game and played impres¬ sively. On the sea¬ son, Dilfer has completed 75 percent of his passes (21 of 28) for 257 yards.
