The four group members will dine with their guests and include audience participation in their performance. The group boasts an extensive reputation domestically and abroad. In the past 11 years, it has performed throughout the west¬ ern United States and recently has extended its reach to Europe and the Middle East. In 1990, Shanachie took its first nationwide tour through seven states, 12 cities and the District of Columbia. The group will travel to Australia follotvingitsperform¬ ance in Fresno. The group has performed for more than seven million people, but it enjoys small scale events like thoseat high schoolsand colleges 1 n addition to touring the coun¬ try, the group has recorded two albums, a feature video and has been played on more than 100 radio stations in the U.S. Jim Rivera, Shanachie's band leader, said theyare perform ingat five college campuses within a two-week period. Wednesday night the group was at California State University, San Francisco, and March 8 they will be at CSU, San Jose. He said they get a lotout of performing on campuses. "We have a lot of fun with it" Rivera said. "There is a certain amount of comedy in it." Hesaid the group really puts on a "show" for the students and doesn't just rely on their folk music for enter¬ tainment "Wegetthemtoclapjaughand sing" during the course of thehour, said Rivera. Nguyen said, "It will be an experience for all students. You can't leam and be educated unless you expose yourself. "There is so much ethnic focus on campus, you sometimes forget abou t thelrish, Scottish, the Welsh and others," she said. Rivera said the group is very "big" with administration and faculty because they can identify with the music. Shanachie, an Irish word that means "storyteller", has special educational shows with question and answer sessions that teach students about American history and music theory. "I feel we have enough pro¬ grams oriented to Hispanics, Blacks and Asians," Nguyen said. "I wanted to bring the Irish songs and display some traditional American background alongside the ethnic minority, so it will bal¬ ance out. 'The Irish will come together and be a part of the total campus picture," she said.
