Features The Collegian • March 10,1991 CSUF dominates design conference •Senior takes first place in competition to design office By Joe M. Torres Collegian Staff Writer Graphic and Interior De¬ sign majors at CSUF domi¬ nated a competition pitting themselves against 300 other Northern Californiadesign students and their programs. The competition, which was divided into several different categories, allowed the students lo have their material shown. It is one of the "most comprehensive competitions in the coun¬ try," said graphic and inte¬ rior design coordinator Pat Hennings-Smith. The main competition in¬ volved thedesign of a 10,000 square foot law firm located in the financial district of San Francisco. The project, attempted by 60 students from nine schools, included lighting plans, electrical plans, floor plans and con¬ struction details. Mary Fish, a graduating senior, won $1,000 in the competition. Renee Best placed first with the Cali- fomian Central American Society of Interior Design¬ ers. Tom Zimmerman placed fifth in his field and is al- Helicopter pilot to speak on changing roles of women By Debbie Richards Collegian Staff Writer Captain Barbera Vogentanz will speak tonight on the role of women in combat with an emphasis on the changes from Grenada to Desert Shield. Vogentanz, anarmy helicop¬ ter pilot, will speak at 7 p.m. in McLane Hall room 121. Her speech will be the keynote ad¬ dress in the series "History of Women in Military Combat." The other event in that series is "Women as Peacemakers" which will be held Thursday evening. Both events are in cele¬ bration of National Women's Herstory Month. Karen Cann-Hartigan, coor- dinator of the speech, said Vogentanz has done extensive research on women in military combat and seemed a logical choice to deliver the speech. "People think women aren't allowed in military combat, which is kind of a misconcep¬ tion," Cann-Hartigan said. "Women aren't allowed on the front lines, but they fly helicop¬ ters and drivesupply trucks. We need to study why we have that distinction if women are going u p anyway. In my personal opin¬ ion, it/s arbitrary." Vogentanz is with the Army National Guard in Fresno, but is currently stationed in theMojave Desert. Cann-Hartigan is work¬ ing with the Air Force as a logis¬ tics management specialist. Vogentanz is scheduled to speak on the distinctions made between combat and non-com- batrolesand how those assigned roles exclude women from suc¬ cess in the civilian world. "(The military policy] is based on women not being al¬ lowed in combat, but it exludes them from civilian pipelines, like being airline pilots. [In combat}, women can do only land-based tours. It they don't get as much experience as a mate pilot, of course they're going tobe looked over for jobs. It's institutional¬ ized discrimination," Cann- Hartigan said. The speech is sponsored by Women's Herstory Month Committee, the Women's Alli¬ ance and the ASI. ready involved with "a commercial-interior design dealership." Hennings-Smith said, "Being at this level of so¬ phistication makes him able tocompete with profession¬ als ahead of us." "Exhibits and Competi¬ tions," a graphic and inte¬ rior design class taught by professor Gary McCurry, performed well in their portion of the competition. "If H give good recogni¬ tion in your portfolio and your resume," said Suzanne Johnson, graduatingsenior. The logo-design part of the competition included color and style of interior decor and employee uni¬ forms. Each project was designed around a specific theme. Jenny Burrow's "Royal Sands" placed second over¬ all in her area. She focused on the design of a luxury hotel. Burrow, who recently traveled to Egypt, chose the colors "brick red, royal blue, ivory and black." She said these colors reminded her of hieroglyphics. David Steinmann's 'The Seaside Ambassador" ylaced third and was awarded $300. Hedescribed his design as "a lighthouse situated by the ocean." CSUF interior design majors continue to sweep the competition and this is only the first year a B.A. in interior design has been offered in the program, Hen¬ nings-Smith said. Students placing high in the competition will have a chance to win $5,500 in an internationally-judged competition to be an¬ nounced in mid-April.
