Fresno State receives national honor for excellence in diversity

Fresno State received the 2014 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity(HEED) award from “
INSIGHT Into Diversity
” magazine, one of the nation’slargest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, national honor recognizing U.S.colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment todiversity and inclusion, Fresno State will be featured along with 82 otherrecipients in the magazine’s November 2014 issue.
According to the magazine, Fresno State was selected for demonstratingexemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, as well as for embracing abroad denition of diversity on campus.

Teniente-Matson chairs the
President’s Commission on Human Relationsand Equity
, a commission created to support diversity, equity andinclusion. Last year the commission launched A Strategic Plan forInclusion, Respect and Equity (ASPIRE), a comprehensive plan to promotean atmosphere of acceptance and fairness on campus.
In the past year the commission has sponsored several initiatives, lecturesand events including the establishment of
gender neutral restrooms
oncampus, hosting forums on race relations and sponsoring a screening of“
The Fresno Language Project
.”
“We hope the HEED award serves as a way to honor those institutions ofhigher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusionas part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein,publisher of “INSIGHT Into Diversity” magazine.
