2 Non-Profit, Private Hospitals Merge
Representatives of Fresno Community and Clovis Memorial hospitals Friday signed an agreement
merging the two non-profit private
medical facilities.
Under the agreement, both facilities will retain their identities.
Leon S. Peters, president of
Community, said the merger will
save money by consolidating purchases of supplies and equipment.
In addition, he said the staffs of
both hospitals can back each other,
and the community would benefit
from the training opportunities available.
Although no cost savings will be
seen immediately on patients' bills,
Peters said, the savings generated
will stave off future increases in
medical costs.
Einar Cook, president of Memorial, called the merger, "A real fine
thing for the health services of the
community."
The new corporation will maintain
the 99-bed acute care hospital in
Clovis and will apply for 24-hour
emergency service there as soon as
financially and medically possible.
The Clovis hospital now operates a
16-hour a day emergency room.
The board of trustees of the corporation will be expanded from 15 to 17,
and at least three of the members
are required to be from Clovis.
The medical staffs of the hospitals
will be separate but accountable to
the board.

Dear Leon:

Leon Peters, left, and Einar Cook sign merger contract.
You have, without a doubt, proven to be the most community
minded person that I have ever known.
You have given so much of your time over a long period and
you remind me of a very close friend, who has since passed
away. His philosophy of life was," do something for somebody
every day." He always felt good when he went home at night
and that helped him to feel good the next morning. You are
a perfect example of my friend.
Wishing you a most happy 1979, and with kindest personal regards, I am,
Sincerely,
Claude Stubblefield
