West Coast IKelc aus Only one world record was tied and none were broken at the sixteenth annual West Coast Relays in Ratcliffe stadium May 16. The University of Southern California won the intercollegiate track and field championship for the eleventh time. The University of California's Hal Davis ran the 100 yard dash in 9.4 to tie the existing world record and break the previous relays record of 9.5. Davis also paced his team to two upset victories over the highly touted USC sprint relay teams. Southern California garnered 73 l/i points to California's 49. Fresno State College, with 12 72 points, placed fifth. No records were broken in the junior col lege competition. Led by Joe Batiste, versatile negro star, Sacramento J. C. upset Comp- ton J. C. 46 to 32%. Compton was seeking its fourth straight win in this division. Los Angeles City College took third place with 21 points. Bob Carlson of Roosevelt High pole vaulted 13 feet, N/4 inches, and an Edison Tech "B" division medley relay team set a mark of 3:44.7 for two new high school Relays records. Carlson was judged the outstanding high school athlete at the Relays, and received a trophy. Bakersfield High won team honors for the eighth time in relays history with 24 points, followed by Roosevelt High with 19 points and Fresno High with 13. 148
