First Row: DAVIS, KEESLING, MADRID, SHROPSHIRE, MILLER, SHIELDS, HELVEY. Second Row: PETERSEN, BAKER, GAINES, ROSE, LAMOURE, FUTRELL, JACKSON, KNOLL. Third Row: CLIFFORD, DELLA, FLEMING, DORFMEIER, STURGEON, CALDWELL, CAZARES, HANNER. The 1942 track team was one of the best ever represented at Fresno State College. Led by Captain Bob Madrid, distance runner, the varsity was aided by freshmen, who are allowed to compete under a new ruling. The opening of the season found the squad going to San Francisco for the indoor track meet, where Madrid won the two mile and Lou Futrell the high hurdle third place. At the Long Beach Relays the medley relay team of Don Baker, Joe Shorpshire, Madrid, and Cazares won over a host of fast rivals. In the meet with the powerful University of Southern California team, Fresno State s-ored a total of 3972 points. The Stanford varsity proved no match for the Bulldogs, losing by a 76 to 54 score. Art Cazares starred in the meet with his record two mile, in 9:18.7. A combined team of Visalia Junior College and Reedley Junior College lost to Fresno State by a 91V2 to 371/2 score, and Cazares also turned in one of the fastest two miles in the country in 9:12.1. Fresno State displayed power winning over San Diego State College, by 93 to 38 and Fresno State athletes took fifth at the P. A. A. meet in Berkeley, May 2, scoring 21'A points. Cazares' tie of 9:05.2 was officially recognized as a new P. A. A. record. The Bulldogs lost the C. C. A. A. crown they have held for three years to San Jose State College 85V2 to 46, in San Diego. May 9. Madrid and Cazares eased to a new conference record in the mile at 4:17.1. Three new school records were established and one was tied during the season. Jean Lamoure broke the old standard in the shot put by half an inch with a heave of 48 feet, 11 inches, while Art Cazares registered a new mark of 9:05.2 in the two mile. Louie Futrell tied the high hurdles mark of 14.5 seconds made by Charles Kaster. 145
