Our pride in each new volume of the Campus depends upon its success in truly portraying the life, the charm, and the spirit of the college. We feel |hat this spirit is sincerely democratic. One feature of the 1938 book reminds us that this was not always true of American colleges. The development of a broadly democratic spirit was a slow process. One step in that progress came just a century ago when co-education gained its first recognition. Bitter years of battle on that issue followed, for prejudice and conceit die hard. The tribute to co-education in this Campus is a fitting gesture in memory of a struggle happily ended. Other barriers to a full realization of democracy in American college life have not everywhere been fully broken down. We may well feel a loyal pride in the way this book, with its beauty and cleverness, shows also the leadership of Fresno State College on the pathway of progress. FRANK W.
