Track THE greatest track team in the history of Fresno State ended the 1931 season by winning the West Coast Relays championship in Class "B". Although in 1929 the Far Western Conference championship was won in addition to the Relays championship, it is doubtful if the 1929 team could approach this season's track team as regards the number of outstanding stars competing. One of the best shot putters on the Pacific Coast, America's high jump champion, and one of the greatest half-milers on the coast competed under the Cardinal and Blue colors during the season just closed. Dick White put the shot almost 50 feet, Marty high jumped 6 feet 5 inches and Jess Markle was clocked in the half-mile in the fast time of 1 minute 55 seconds. These marks are good in any league. The Bulldogs had the classiest team in the conference but in the annual conference meet, the Fresno tracksters did not come through as was expected. Fresno's two star sprinters, Norman Jackson, last year's captain, and Lee Ayers, were unable to compete in the conference track meet and San Jose finished one, two, three in both sprint events. This fact, coupled with the poor performances of other Bulldog track men, altered the situation slightly and San Jose managed to take the first in the meet. The year 1931 marked the first time that the Olympic Club of San Francisco, famous on the coast for its track teams, met the Bulldogs on a track contest. The Winged "O" club of the bay city won after "one of the closests meets they had competed in all year. The result was in doubt until the final events, the score being 72 to 59. The year 1931 also saw Captain Jess Markle end his track career at Fresno State. Markle ended his fourth season of track competition at State by winning several beautiful races. Captain Markle is the greatest half and quarter miler ever developed at the Bulldog institution. Only 72
