ATHLETIC ' - * Walmsley in a tossing mood Superior Relays FOR the fourth consecutive year, Fresno State captured the championship of the Superior Relays held at Sacramento. Only sixteen men represented Fresno at the relays but these sixteen were able to overwhelm any and all opposition offered by the rival institutions and to score 49 points. They were followed by Sacramento J. C. with 34, San Jose State, pre-meet favorites with 33, University of California Frosh, 12, Menlo J. C, 11, Modesto J. C, 11, California Aggies, 6. Although Hanner's proteges were not expected to win with such a small squad, they nevertheless won six of the eleven events and set four new meet records. The new marks set up by the Bulldogs were made in the high jump, shot put, 120 yard high hurdles and the one-mile relay. Walt Marty, world's inter-scholastic high jump champion, went over the bar at 6 feet 4 inches and Herb Denham traveled over the high sticks in the record time of 15.5 "Large Richard" White and "Fireman" Joe Lewis grabbed the first two places in the shot put with White's put of 47 feet 10^ inches, putting the old mark into discard. The mile relay squad composed of Ted Chism, Ray Lonberg, Walt Marty and Captain Jess Markle set up a new record in this event in the fast time of 3-24.4. Markle, anchor man, ran a beautiful race to lead the Sacramento man to the tape by thirty yards. The two-mile relay squad, composed of Ham Knott, Paul Bailey, Hal Beatty and Markle, although not setting a new mark, easily won their event in the time of 8:14.6. San Jose came in second with the Aggies third. The other relay squad entered in the medley relay could do no better than capture a fourth. Sacramento headed the teams to the tape in this relay race. Everett Keyes in the discus bested any of his former marks with a toss of 136 feet, A}/2 inches. Keyes beat out both Diu and Schmitt of San Jose who were favored before the meet to place ahead of the lone Fresno entrant. Two other records were banished during the relays. One was the javelin, which was broken by Cunningham of San Jose with an exceptional heave of 191 feet 11 inches while a new mark was set up by Kiegel, Cal Frosh in the 100 yard dash when he traversed that distance in 9.8. 78
