ATHLETIC Life honors was much closer with three teams tying for the coveted position on the top of the heap. The Commercial Club, Japanese Boys, and the Engineers were the teams that deadlocked. The Commercial Club won out in the play-off by defeating the Engineers 15 to 10 and the Japanese Boys 26 to 14 earning the right to meet the Zeta Mu's for the intramural championship in a three game series. The Weldon Avenue fraternity was crowned the champions after an exciting play-off. The Zeta Mu's won the first game 19 to 18, lost the second 12 to 10, but emerged victorious in the third contest, and with it won the championship of the college. The championship team was composed of Beatty, and Durham, guards; Patterson, center; and Shelbourne and George, forwards. Shelbourne was outstanding as a forward in the circuit while Shenson of the Commercial Club proved the star of his team. The next athletic event on the intramural athletic program was the hand-ball tournament which was started on April 20. Twenty-five men signed up for the tournament. The tournament lasted for about three weeks with Harry Shenson, Bill Mesple and Archie Chrisman going into the final rounds for the singles championship. In the doubles Kufis and Diel, Chrisman and Shenson, and Mesple and Barsamian were the teams that proved outstanding. Indoor baseball was the next, and nine teams entered the rounds. The teams entered were: Sigma Alpha Chi, Mu Alpha Delta, Alpha, Zeta Mu, Chi Pi Sigma, Cardinal Hall, Engineer's Club, High Frosh, and Low Frosh. Tennis and swimming tournaments were to have followed indoor baseball. Individual trophies were awarded to the winners of the handball, swimming and tennis contests while team trophies were awarded to the winner of the basket-ball and baseball championships. Riding classes were formed for the first time in Fresno State's history and several games were played by the men's polo team. In addition to the regular intramural program, a tennis team composed of Walter Senior and Warren Arbuckle was sent to Sacramento and won the tennis championship of the Far Western Conference in both the singles and the doubles. Senior won the singles crown and paired with Arbuckle, walked off with the doubles championship. This was the first time that a tennis tournament had been held in the conference. 90
