SUMMER SCHOOL The popularity of the 1940 Sierra Summer Session, where "she-spooks" discarded dresses for slacks and shorts and the "hill-goony" reigned supreme, was evidenced in the registration of students from as far as West Virginia to the east and Washington to the north. Living in tents at Huntington Lake in the company of the ever-present dirt that could only partially be removed in a frigid shower, students forgot bank accounts and class lines temporarily. This neighborliness resulted in the greeting, "Hey Dad," applied alike to bosom pal and stranger, and also caused a week's shutdown of the library—reopened amid festivities that included the presentation of a crowbar to Dr. Mitchell P. Briggs, dean of the summer school session. Outdoor awning-canopied classrooms were the workshops for the 284 students enrolled in regular classes, with the temperature hovering between 70 and 80. 70
