Head Coach Bill Vandenburgh A. W. Holmes Manager of Athletics Coach Bill Vandenburgh's Bulldogs reigned unchallenged as the finest quintet in Fresno State College history. Blessed with experience, height and depth, and infused with desire, the Bulldogs more than held their own in competition with many of the top rated cage teams on the West Coast to compile a sparkling 19-8 collegiate record. Returning to the California Collegiate Athletic Association after two years in the California Basketball Association, the Bulldogs fought an uphill battle to become the first championship team at State in more than 20 years. Vandenburgh's team dropped its second league game in overtime to defending champion San Diego State, then, with the pressure mounting each week, the Bulldogs won their final eight tilts to tie the Aztecs. Fresno and San Diego met in a post season titanic on the neutral Los Angeles State floor to decide the CCAA's representative in the College Division NCAA play-offs. Behind the great play of forward Len Brown, the Bulldogs squeezed by the sky-high Aztecs, 76-73, in overtime, to qualify for the District Eight NCAA tournament. John Steinborn Commissioner of Athletics 227
