Bob Burgess Line Coach Kenny Gleason Backfield Coach Darrel Stanley End Coach Birger Johnson Trainer Hal Beatty Athletic Director THE SEASON As the season opened the Bulldogs had reason for guarded optimism. Only eight lettermen had returned from the 1956 squad which Coach Van Galder rated "the best I ever coached." But seven of the eight were starters on the '56 team. Among the new faces were several former junior college stars and a light sprinkling of promising freshmen. The schedule, however, was viewed with some alarm by the coaches who termed it "at least as tough as any we have had in the last seven years." Before the opening kick- off of the camaign, the Bulldog ranks were seriously thinned by injuries and the invasion of the flu bug. Optimism gave way to pessimism and despair as the early season competition proved "even tougher than expected." 213
