THE CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGES The 19 campuses of the California State Colleges, spanning the state f.rom Humboldt County in the north to San Diego in the south, represent the largest system of public higher education ln the Weste.m Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. Current enrollment exceeds 212,000 full-time and part-time studentS. The faculry and administrative staff number approximately 10,000. Each college in this system, with 11 geographic and curricular character of its own, offers a basic program in the liberal arts. Course offerings leading to the bachelor's and master's degree and a limited number of joint doctoral degrees are designed to satisfy existing student interescs while serving the educational and professional requiremcnrs of the state. The California State Colleges arc dedicated to rigorous academic standards. The primary faculry rc.~ponsibility is the instructional process, with recognition of the necessary role of research in institutions of higher education. Rc.~ponsibiliry for the C1.lifomia State Colleges is vested in the Board of Trustees, which is appointed by the Governor, and irs administrative officer, the Chancellor. The Trustees and the Chancellor set broad policy for the colleges while delegating responsibility for implcmenrarion to the colleges. A statewide Academic Senate, made up of representatives elected by the faculty at each college, recommends academic policy to the Board of T.rusrees through the Chancellor. While the oldest of the colleges, San Jose State College, was founded over a cenmry ago, the California State College system under an independent Board of Trustees was created by the Donahoe Act of 1960. The California State Colleges are now in a dynamic period of development. Prior ro World War ll, there were seven State Colleges with a peak total enrollment of some 13,000. Since 1947 twelve new colleges have been established, and sites have been selected for new colleges in Ventura, San Mateo, and Contn Costa Counties. Enrollment in the system is expected to reach 300,000 by 1980. FRESNO STATE COLLEGE ADVISORY BOARD A group of thirteen citizens of Fresno and vicinity appointed by the Trustees of the California State Colleges as an advisory body to the administration of Fresno State College.
