64 FRESNO STATE COLLEGE APPLICAnON FOR MASTER'S DEGREE An application for rhe master's degree must be filed in the Office of the Dean, School of Graduate Studjes, in the first two weeks of a semester or first week of a sumtner session in which the work is to be completed. (For dates see College Calendar: or Scbedtlle of Corii'Ses; sec also Schedule of Fees.) Failure to complete requirements for the degree during the semester of the application n.ecessjtates the filing of a new application for the semester of actual completion. FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT Fresno State College does not have a general forcign language requirement for the master's degree. Some specific master's degree majors do, however, reqwre competence in an appro{>riate foxeign language. (Sec deparnnental Foreign Lll'll ·guage Reqrdreme1zt and department requirements.) Students who contempbte graduate study beyond the master's degree are urged also to investigate foreign language requirements in the· institmion in which they anticipate advanced graduate study. MAXIMUM STUDY LOAD Students are warned that graduate courses require substantially more concentrated study than do undergraduate courses. During the full or spring semester 16 units is the maximum load for masre1·'s degree students in full-time attendance when one or more courses in the 200 series are included. Students employed full time may take a maximum of 6 units. For maximum units for summer session see the Swmne1· Sesrion Bulletin. GRADE REQUIREMENTS All graduate students will be held to the scholarship standards listed under Regulations and Procedures. No course with a grade below C may apply on a master's degree contract program. To be eligible for advancement to c:mdidacy, a student muse have earned a B average (both overall and at Fresno Stare College) on all upper division and graduate course work completed after the date of embarking on the first course to be included in the master's degree program. To be eligible for enrollment in the thesis or project or in a semin:tr alternative to the thesis, a student must have beeu advanced to candidncy and must have maintained a B average on his contract program. To be eligjblc for the granting of the degree, a student must have maintained a B average on his complete contract program. Any grade eru'Iled in a course on the contract program continues to figure in the grade-point average, even if that course is for any .reason later dropped from the program. To be eligible to receive the master's degree with distinction a student must have earned a 3.9 grade-point average on the contract program for the master's degree or on nil upper division and graduate work subsequent to the bachelor's degree. He must also be nominated by his department. EXAMINATIONS he Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Te.~t (or the Admission Test for Graduate Study in Business) is .requil·ed not later than the end of the first semester of master's degree study. A satisfactory score in The Graduate Recorcl F.x~mina tions Advanced Test irt the student's majo.l' field (or a departmental qtialifyjng examination) is required for advancement to candidacy. In addition to the qualifying examinations required for advancement to candidacy fo.c the master's degree, all departments reserve the right to require written or oral comprehensive examinations when circumstances demand.
