Analysis of interventive strategies in large groups, organizations, and the community. FS Master of Social Work This program is designed to prepare students for advanced social work practice — as social work practitioners who are capable of intervening at individual, family, small group, organization, and community levels. Students achieve competence in problem identifi cation, assessment, development of intervention plans, and evaluation of prac-tice. Students build cross-cultural awareness and learn to use empower ment and social justice perspectives when making interven-tions with client systems of various sizes. SWRK 135. Human Behavior and the Social Environment (3) Prerequisite: SWRK 20 or by permission of instructor. A general systems approach focused on the interaction of biological, psychological, and cultural phenomena with individuals, small groups, complex organiza-tions, and communities. F SWRK 136. Cultural Diversity and Oppression (3) Prerequisites: G.E. Foundation and Breadth Area D. Cultural, economic, ethnic, social, and psychological considerations for helping members of groups who suffer oppressed status in heterogeneous society. Required for Cross-Cultural Competency Certifi cate. G.E. Multicultural/International MI (except for social work majors). FS SWRK 137. Principles in Cross-Cultural Competence (3) Prerequisite: SWRK 136. Theoretical frame-work for skill-based cultural competency in educational, business, and public/private human services settings. Introduction to Mediation and Confl ict Resolution for Human Service Professionals (3) Provides students with a knowledge base in mediation as a method of confl ict resolution. Basic policies and major programs in contemporary social welfare; consumption, income supports, job provision, housing, health, civil rights, consumer advocacy, population control, environmental standards; principles of social security, administration of social services, roles of government and citizen participation. F SWRK 124. Social Welfare Policy Advocacy (1) A two-day course offered in March of the spring semester in the state capital of Sac-ramento, California. Provides beginning skill-building in advocacy and political ac-tion on current social welfare policy issues. S (Formerly SWRK 122T) SWRK 125. Social Services for the Aging (3) (Same as GERON 125.) Students will be ac-quainted with the common bio-psycho-social needs of the aging in the United States and the social services available to meet those needs. Within the context of social work values and problem-solving methods, attention will be given to issues of ethnicity, gender, and gaps in services. S SWRK 128. Child Welfare (3) History, development, and provision of child welfare services in the United States. Meets state of California prelicensure requirements for child abuse assessment and reporting content. FS SWRK 129. Treatment of Chemical Dependency (3) Intervention and treatment of the chemically dependent and of family members.
